PWNCAST | Season 1: Episode 8 – Ye Olde Used Games Debate

This week we opt to tackle the used games debate head on, with Carl and Jon fervently in favour of the pre-owned market as I skulk about as a sort of devil's advocate. We take a look at the situation from all angles, and cast our thoughts forward into the future. In the wake of GAME's slip into administration, if the future is truly digital, will there be a need for retailers at all?

PWNCAST | Season 1: Episode 8, Recorded: March 29th, 2012

Some of the things that get discussed this week:

  • Borderlands 2
  • Guild Wars 2
  • Ridge Racer Unbounded
  • The rumoured Sony Orbis
  • The used games debate
  • Industry vs Retail
  • Our digital future
  • Are retailers soon to become a thing of the past?

...and much, much more.

Hi, I've been enjoying the podcast since it started. Looking forward to this episode to see what you have to say regarding the rumoured anti used games next gen systems.

I don't think I've spoken to any ardent or casual games fan who is remotely in favour of this. I believe we don't really have any guarantees that standard RRP's will lower (as often touted by industry figures when discussing the new systems) if they take used games out of the equation and gamers have no reason to trust that they will.

What is it that makes games different from other entertainment mediums - like CD's and DVD's? Higher cost to produce, and higher cost to purchase, for sure. But ethically and on the base level of purchasing a copy licence of an artistic work, why (if these rumours transpire) do you have the right to resell your DVD's to your local second hand entertainment store, on ebay or simply give to friends and family - but not your games?

Also - Any chance of an RSS feed specifically for the podcast or adding it to the digitalpodcast.com directory? I tend to keep up with podcasts on my phone while travelling, and it would be great to have the dealspwn podcast automatically update with applications.
