Character Server Transfers & Other Plans Afoot
In the latest Community Q&A session posted on the official website, the developers from BioWare revealed some interesting facts regarding Star Wars: The Old Republic moving forward, including the addition of more playable race a lot sooner than many would have thought.
“Can’t comment on what species you might see, but you can expect the roster of playable species to expand... this year” was the response from Lead Game Designer Daniel Erickson on the subject. So no confirmation if we would be able to legitimately shout ‘IT’S A TRAP’ as a Mon Calamari, but the planned expansion to the roster is interesting news none the less.
Character Transfer plans were also addressed by Erickson, with news that the service would be operational sooner rather than later in an effort to combat the low populations on some servers.
“We will be rolling out our Character Transfer Service in early summer. First we’ll have some targeted free transfers from/to specific servers, but that will be followed with a broader system where you can either take advantage of free promotional transfers to specific servers or paid transfers to the server of your choice. We know everyone has more questions about character transfer, and we’ll reveal more details closer to the launch date.”
Account-wide Datacron collection is currently being considered to avoid having to collect them on every character, along with several other Legacy-based rewards, and although there are “big plans” involving the achievements system, Principal Lead Systems Designer Damion Schubert simply stated that the plans were “too big to share prematurely.”
In response to the latest in-game event involving the Rakghoul plague, Erickson teased that there was more in store for the community.
“We definitely have more surprises coming in the future but we don’t want to have the same format or become predictable. I will say that these surprises will come in a variety of sizes that range from the stealthily rolled-out magenta Lightsaber crystal hunt, to full on server-wide explosions like the Rakghoul Plague.”
Other tidbits to come out of the Q&A session included the intention to include dual specs in the future, the ability to adapt social armor, and the reasoning behind capping the amount of companions that can be sent out on trade skill tasks.
