Red Faction: Armageddon Gets UK Release Date

THQ and Volition Inc. have announced a firm release date for the next chapter in the Red Faction Franchise. Armageddon will be hitting UK shores on June 3rd, providing us with a very different experience than we're used to from the long-running series.

Instead of the martian sandbox tundra (used to great effect in Red Faction:  Guerilla), Armageddon takes place in the tunnels deep within the core of the planet. Playing as veteran demonlition-type-chap Darius Mason, players will need to defend humanity from a terrifying 'alien' race that attack from below the surface. Structures can be reassembled as well as destroyed- which will hopefully open up a range of tactical options. Here's a warm pile of spiely blurb for your cynical perusal:

Red Faction: Armageddon is an incredible new entry in this vaunted franchise, and Volition once again pushes the envelope of technology and science fiction. Come [June], players can look forward to collapsing entire buildings on their enemies, using the world as their weapon. - Danny Bilson, Executive Vice President, Core Games, THQ

What little we've seen of Red Faction: Armageddon suggests that it's shaping up rather well, but we hope that the core gameplay won't be cramped by its subterranean setting.

Oh, and there'll also be a SyFy channel film to fill in some backstory. Avoid contact with eyes at all costs.

I'm a little confused by this -
"Armageddon will [provide] us with a very different experience than we’re used to from the long-running series. Instead of the martian sandbox tundra (used to great effect in Red Faction: Guerilla), Armageddon takes place in the tunnels deep within the core of the planet."
How is that a very different experience? The first game was entirely set in the tunnels. Parker was a miner, the Red Faction was a miners' rebellion. Large portions of Red Faction 2 were also set underground. If anything, Guerilla is the odd game out in that regard, as it was the first game in the series to be completely set above ground, and the first to be a sandbox game. If anything, it sounds like Armageddon will be a return to the series' roots.

Granted, but it's the focus on battling horrifying aliens that should provide the major change of pace.

Very true. Armageddon seems to be taking a page from Dead Space's book with its particular foes.

We're with you there... but it could be worse. Considering recent trends, Mason could well have been fighting Zombies.
