While Red Steel’s blend of gun slinging and first person sword-play was originally a bit too ambitious for the Wii – and saw the game utterly panned by the critics as a consequence – Red Steel 2 is already carving out a great reputation for itself. From the outset it’s clear that Ubisoft have gone more for a reworking of the 2006 original rather than a sequel. Instead of retaining the urban Yakuza angle, Red Steel 2 goes in for a Wild West gun slinging scenario which is crossed with Japanese-style-samurai-sword-fighting. Utilizing Motion Plus technology, RS2 manages to smooth over the sluggish, unwieldy and unresponsive control system which so badly undermined the game-play of the original.
RS2 leans towards sword fighting a little more than gun slinging, and the combat system can be quite difficult to get the hang of initially (hence so much emphasis on training). Pulling off powerful sword attacks requires full use of your arm which means you’re really going feel it the next day after brawling with multiple enemies. The bottom line is that the controls actually work however.
There might be a few minor problems with swipes being misinterpreted for stabs, but on the whole it’s a very well executed system. Combine this with the game’s quality visuals (definitely one of the best looking game’s currently out on the Wii), great sound track and some really stylish presentation, and Red Steel 2 is potentially one of the best action games Wii owners have yet been treated to.
