Ubisoft's follow up to the disappointing Red Steel is actually a pretty darn good game, which really does not deserve to have already fallen into the <£25 bracket. However the price is great news for us, offering a £4 saving compared to the next best offer of £26.99 from Cool Shop.
Red Steel 2 takes place in a curious future where Japanese samurai meet the dusty landscapes of the Old West. The story opens as the last member of the Kusagari Clan is dragged across a desert landscape, trailing behind a motorbike. The unnamed fellow eventually manages to escape this (miraculously walking away without a face and body flayed like a sunday roast) and slink off to find his sensei, who reveals that the enigmatic lad is in fact a hero who was banished five years ago after the Jackal gang took over the city and stole his katana. Of course our Hero cannot leave such behaviour unpunished and so heads off to avenge his clan and take down the Jackals.
Red Steel 2 stands as awesome testament to just what can be achieved with the Wii Motion Plus, finally unlocking some of the potential that Nintendo's system holds but is so tragically under-exploited. Not only that but it also boasts some fantastic visuals and stands up as one of the very best looking games on the console. On the downside the story feels somewhat underdeveloped and no sooner does it start to really get going, than it is over. Furthermore, there are no multiplayer options to further its longevity and little to make you want to jump back into a second playthrough any time soon.
This is a great game and well worth its price tag. However, the fact that it relies on the Wii Motion Plus peripheral is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it allows for the excellent mix of deep and powerful swordplay mechanics and highly intuitive shooting. However, with only 2 games relying on the gizmo and 16 supporting it at all, the chances are, unless you have Wii Sports Resort, you will need to shell out for the version of the game that comes bundled with the Motion Plus or try to find a cheap one separately.
