REPORT: Conroy Will Not Be Returning As Batman In Arkham Origins

Kevin Conroy, the chap who gave voice (and therefore life) to the Dark Knight in Batman: The Animated Series and Rocksteady's two fantastic Arkham games, may not be returning for the WB Montreal-produced Arkham Origins.

Before you start getting uppity, however, this does make a certain amount of sense. This is an origins story, after all, featuring a younger Bruce Wayne.

According to a report in South Africa's NAG Magazine, the developers were keen to "use a new younger actor because the game features Batman in his early years".

With any luck, they'll get Bruce Greenwood in, who voiced Batman in Young Justice. Even so, though, we'll miss Conroy's gravelly tones. [via Kotaku]

Yet another change to the established franchise which could endanger the end product.

Also, what's with all the regular voice actors being replaced recently?? Sam Fisher, Snake, Batman, Thief, etc.

This one actually makes sense to me. It's a different version of the character, a younger Batman/Wayne who demands a younger actor. Moreover, Batman is a character under constant reinvention. This V/O decision actually makes artistic sense IMHO.

Whether or not the prequel idea itself makes artistic sense is another thing altogether :D

I agree with your points but tbh I think the whole idea sounds pretty terrible, time will tell. I'm not really getting uppity any more than the revealed details have made me already which is more like disappointed. It's just Conroy *IS* Batman as far as I'm concerned. He has mastered the exact mix of intimidation, fearlessness, subdued rage, power and psychotic arrogance that paints the best picture of Batman's psyche. I think is one of the most important factors with games like this and making them successful. A large part of these games is story and characterisation previously the delivery has IMHO been exemplary. Of course there always need to be evolution however...

one of my favourite parts of AC is the bit where the female doctor (IIRC) swings a pipe at Batman from behind a box and then says she could have killed him. He responds with a sort of nonchalant menace "Trust me doctor. If you could have hurt me, we wouldn't be having this conversation." (or similar) I think I actually clapped when I saw it. Gold. Anyway I should shut up now...
