A Merry Christmas For 3DS?

Report: PS Vita UK Release Set For 2012?

Recent retailer projections listed the PS Vita's release date as November 4th (in time to capitalise on the lucrative holiday trade), but according to a report from CVG, Sony won't be releasing their hew handheld on British shores until 2012. A "senior retail source close to SCEE" has reportedly stated that Sony are "gifting" the Christmas season to Nintendo, but that the Vita is still set for a holiday launch in US territories.

Sony knows it's effectively gifting the festive handheld market to 3DS - but is still really confident of a success. The overall strategy is that they want the hardcore to buy first and then spread the word. It's a blow for us, but they think they can still do that in the UK without the Christmas sales boost.

Sony have yet to confirm or deny the report, and we'll keep you posted. Still, labelling the states as the "hardcore" is a little aggravating. What say you? [CVG]

UPDATE: Sony has informed us that "We have not announced a release date for Vita yet and cannot offer further comment." Which essentially means that we'll need to watch this space. However, since the Vita is likely to be region free (and my source pointed us towards recent comments made to IGN), it's likely that the "hardcore" UK fanbase will be able to import before Christmas. To be honest, it will probably work out cheaper if rumours of an August price drop prove unfounded.

Can't understand Sony's thinking on this one. They have a far greater share of the market in Europe than in North America (Not sure about handhelds, but look at their console share). Why not release in their strongest market first? I'll still pick one up, and just play 3DS over the holidays, but if true this is still irritating. I thought we were past the stage of phased console launches...

I don't want a 3DS or a Vita. £40 for a handheld game? No thanks.

I've heard back from Sony and have updated the story with what we know. Which isn't much, admittedly.

Most 3DS games are around £30 at launch, so I'd imagine the Vita to have a competitive price for software, would be surprised if they even started above £35 at launch. Anyway, the rate at which software prices fall these days, why not just wait a few weeks and pick up the games for sub £20? A bunch of new 3DS launch games were being sold for £7.99 by Bee.com earlier in the week.

Erm, the current estimate RRP is £39.99 according to a number of retailers... but it's just a projection, not a statement of fact. We'll almost certainly learn more at Gamescom.
