A Merry Christmas For 3DS?
Recent retailer projections listed the PS Vita's release date as November 4th (in time to capitalise on the lucrative holiday trade), but according to a report from CVG, Sony won't be releasing their hew handheld on British shores until 2012. A "senior retail source close to SCEE" has reportedly stated that Sony are "gifting" the Christmas season to Nintendo, but that the Vita is still set for a holiday launch in US territories.
Sony knows it's effectively gifting the festive handheld market to 3DS - but is still really confident of a success. The overall strategy is that they want the hardcore to buy first and then spread the word. It's a blow for us, but they think they can still do that in the UK without the Christmas sales boost.
Sony have yet to confirm or deny the report, and we'll keep you posted. Still, labelling the states as the "hardcore" is a little aggravating. What say you? [CVG]
UPDATE: Sony has informed us that "We have not announced a release date for Vita yet and cannot offer further comment." Which essentially means that we'll need to watch this space. However, since the Vita is likely to be region free (and my source pointed us towards recent comments made to IGN), it's likely that the "hardcore" UK fanbase will be able to import before Christmas. To be honest, it will probably work out cheaper if rumours of an August price drop prove unfounded.
