Report: R.I.P. Gamestation, Stores To Rebrand As GAME

Breaking news: MCV reports that the GAME Group will be axing the Gamestation brand, repurposing existing stores as GAME stockists instead . The news broke during a GAME Group conference this morning. We don't yet know whether gamestation.co.uk will continue to operate as an online retailer - or the timeframe as yet - but I daresay that the decision will infuriate some, sadden others and barely register with those who typically buy online.

Gamestation loyalty cards can be converted into GAME reward cards and used in GAME stores (I believe), don't worry.

I'm personally a little worried about what will happen in the few high streets that still have both a GAME and Gamestation in close proximity, but we'll know more over the next few days. It's possible that the overall GAME brand will also be revamped, potentially with a new logo and identity.

I guess that's good bye to the best of the brand. Gamestation was always better than game - even more so with regards to older consoles and pc games....

For me it was the other way around GAME has always been better (not my local one thought I hate the manager there), gamestation was great before GAME's takeover the big store in Birmingham had 2 levels the bottom floor had old classics and PC games whereas the ground floor had console games, it was fantastic back then.

Gamestation were excellent before the Game takeover - selling a wide range of games - vintage and modern.

Online is the only way to go now really. Bring back E.B it was always way better than Game/Gamestation.

I'm actually surprised it took so long for this happen after the buy-out. However with the parent company lucky to alive and still in uncertain waters, it makes sense to consolidate your resources.

In Stockport there was a GAME and Gamestation right next door to each other and the Gamestation has been closed for a few months now. I figured it was only a matter of time til this happened.

Gamestation ftw! Always! Always helpfull and not bouncing ontop of you as soon as you enter. Shame that, as one of the nearest to me is Scunthorpe. They had Gamestation and Game with 300yds and Gstation always was the busier shop. To the extent that they shut the Game when the culls came.

Boooooo hiss!

I do most of my high street shopping in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool...
Middlesbrough Game is still going, but is crap.
Middlesbrough Gamestation closed 2012.
Hartlepool Game closed approx 2009.
Hartlepool Gamestation closed 2012.

I agree Gamestation was definitely the better of the two (but I mourned it a while back). The staff actually knew a thing or two about gaming, whereas half the staff in Game don't appear to know anything about their wares - you get the distinct impression most don't have consoles/PCs... :\
Prices seem to be ridiculous, too. It's generally the most expensive place to get new games, and their second hand games are usually more expensive than the new versions elsewhere!

These days I mainly buy online. If I'm to look on the high street it'll be Grainger Games (mainly oop north). I only wander into Game if I've got way too much free time, and I invariably walk out a short time later, shaking my head in disgust and despair.

HERE! HERE! EB was fantastic and reasonably priced. I mourned the day they got eaten by GAME and revel in GAMES not-before-time-demise.
