Report: Ubisoft DRM Limits Installs To Specific Hardware Configurations

Upgraded Your Rig? You'll Need Another Activation...

Ubisoft haven't exactly covered themselves in glory with their forays into the murky world of hacked DRM and misprinted Online Passes, and if a new report is to be believed, they've managed to cock up again. Guru3D was surprised to discover that Anno 2070's anti-piracy software can't tell the difference between an entirely new computer and a new hardware configuration, and since it only allows for three installs, meant that they couldn't review the game after switching out a GeForce GTX 580 graphics card for a GTX 590.

Even if this is an isolated incident, it's still a fairly embarrassing state of affairs. We love you, Ubisoft, but we reckon that less might be more when it comes to your DRM.

CONFIRMED: The Anno 2070 Copy Protection FAQ states that this indeed the case - and the status quo rather than a single incident. However, you'll be able to contact customer support and request a new activation key if you legitimately need one.

That is stupid. I chop and change components all the time. I completed Arkham City once and that took 2 (almost 3) of my 5 installs.

3 installs only is too few unless the price reflects it.

I will not buy this.

The wording on the Anno 2070 installation FAQ also uses the word "configurations" rather than "computers."

And yes, the magic number is indeed a lowly three.
