Resident Evil 6 Will Give The Series An Overhaul

I'm not sure whether to be excited or deeply fearful at the news that Resident Evil 6 is set to make some pretty major changes to the standard set-up of the previous games in the series, so I'm going to fall back on the hope that it's a step in the right direction!

Masachika Kawata, producer of Resident Evil: Raccoon City, had this to say about the next chapter in the deliciously gruesome set of games:

The series will see a complete renovation with the next entry on every level. But we can't forget about all the previous entries that have led to the creation of many possibilities for the franchise. I can't say if we're going to make it [Resident Evil 6] survival horror or a shooter . . . but I can say that it'll be totally different.

Fingers crossed it'll be a combination of survival horror and shooter, rather than just plonking it haphazardly into a single genre, although who know it could always cross over into RPG territory I suppose. The important thing is that these changes are for the better like the ones we saw in Resident Evil 4, rather than those in the decidedly average Resident Evil 5! [Kotaku]

Am I the only one who's a bit bored with the Resident Evil franchise? The games have in my opinion dropped in quality with each release going from gripping survival horror to overwhelming enemies, quick time events and run and gun gameplay. I'd much rather see Res Evil head back to the roots of the original two games and their heavy atmosphere. Games like dead space have already tied up this genre pretty well so if they want to do something original they need to take a page from alan wake and go for sp[ooky over shooty!
