Yes, we can finally drive the Batmobile!
WB Games Montreal did a reasonable if underwhelming job with Batman: Arkham Origins, but we all knew that original masterminds Rocksteady Studios had to be working on a tasty new project for next-gen systems.
An exciting prospect... which has been blown wide open thanks to an indiscreet product listing from GAME, followed by a Game Informer cover story. Batman: Arkham Knight is set to release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One later this year, providing the "explosive finale" to the Arkham series alongside the opportunity to finally get behind the wheel of the Batmobile.
UPDATE: Enjoy the announcement trailer!
According to the blurb, Arkham Knight allows players to "be a part of the explosive finale in the Batman Arkham series," as the villainous Scarecrow returns to grip the city in his own artificial brand of fear. Players will once again "take to the rooftops," but better yet, take to the streets in a suitably mean iteration of the Batmobile. As you can see in the box art, it takes inspiration from both Nolan's films and the classic neon fin-toting classic models, but frankly it has been a long time coming.
Game Informer quickly leapt to deliver more details, capitalising on the opportunity by revealing Arkham Knight as this month's cover story. "An entirely new area of Gotham City, far larger than Arkham City, has much wider streets to accommodate the new driving gameplay that is designed to integrate smoothly with Batman's gliding and grappling traversal," they explained in the website teaser for the March issue. "Batman chases down super villains Scarecrow, Penguin, Two-Face, Harley Quinn, and more."
We'll doubtlessly hear much more about Batman: Arkham Knight over the coming months and in the run-up to E3. For now, it's great to see that Rocksteady are back in the driving seat.
We know you're excited about Rocksteady's fully new-gen debut. Sound off in the comments!
