With games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Marvel Vs Capcom completely dominating the market when it comes to mashing together characters from different companies, Japanese RPG Cross Edge is certainly up against some tough competition. However that said, there is something slightly unfair about the pasting the game received, particularly in its IGN review, where Cross Edge was subjected to a vindictive – almost hateful – assault and given a rather pathetic score of 3.5/10.
However, after perusing the reactions of many gamers, it some becomes clear that the majority feel this to be completely unjust, and an angry backlash has been steadily gaining momentum on the IGN comment section. So if you like the idea of a load of Eastern gaming legends coming together to do battle, Cross Edge is currently going for just £20.39 from CD WOW which is a massive £8.60 cheaper than the next best deal from Shopto.
The main problem the IGN reviewer had with the game was that he found it awkward and stressful to play, in fact, that’s an understatement - Cross Edge almost tipped him over the edge. To be balanced he did praise the game for the fact you could fast forward most of the cut scenes, (then again, that does still sound like a criticism if I am honest) but got very upset by the complexity of the gameplay.
Too many bars, charts and icons apparently which means the game is pretty much incomprehensible to anyone other than a graduate from MIT. The controls were ‘counterintuitive’, ‘baffling’ and it was impossible to get emotionally involved – ‘a huge part of the RPG experience’. In the end it was like he was disgusted by the game that the review had simply became a cathartic way for him to vent all of the frustration and anger, and purge all that hatred for Cross Edge from his system. So, if you put a lot of faith in the views expressed by IGN, this one might not be everyone’s cup of tea…
