The long-delayed Final Fantasy Versus XIII may have been quietly cancelled within the last few weeks, reports suggest today.
According to Kotaku's sources, Square Enix made the decision to can the Final Fantasy XIII spin-off in the last few weeks, badly affecting morale within the studio. The decision has ostensibly been kept quiet to ensure that Square's share prices don't take a hit, amongst other concerns.
Another source also suggests that Final Fantasy Versus XIII's resources have been folded into another project - probably Final Fantasy XV.
Versus has practically become vapourware after we saw its debut trailer nearly six years ago, with only a trickle of info and the occasional video reaching the press since. However, with Square set to deploy some Final Fantasy-related announcements as part of their 25th anniversary event on September 1st, there may be hope for the project yet.
Just to refresh your memory, here's the latest trailer, which hit last year.
