Rumour: Sony "Confident" Of Releasing PS4 Before Xbox 720?

PlayStation 4 rumours have been flying in thick and fast over the last few weeks, with the latest one reportedly outing hardware specifications and an anti pre-owned game system. However, according a report from VG247 (they've been busy today), Sony aren't content to be the last to release for the next generation - and plans to get the jump on Microsoft at E3 2013.

“Sony are completely in the belief that they have the jump on Microsoft this time,” stated the anonymous source. “You should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.”

Sony are apparently "confident" that the PlayStation 4 will be both announced and released before Microsoft's next home console - heavily tipped for Christmas 2013. This ties in with a statement made by Sony Europe boss Jim Ryan late last year, which suggested that launching last would be "undesirable" for the company.

The more I hear about the "next-gen" consoles, the more certain I am that I don't want/need one.

Yeah you and me both, the more rumours that surface the less appealing next gen sounds.

I want better graphics from a new console.

There are lots of things I don't like the sound of with the next gen though. But consoles are so far behind the PC for graphics it often puts me off buying a game.

Started FF XIII-2 and the cutscenes are amazing... but the whole game could one day look that good. One day.

Have you seen the Epic tech demo, Crytek tech demo and the Xbox mega-meshes video?

Check it, check it, check it - we would be here all already if it wasn't for these archaic consoles.

Mega Meshes - Modelling, rendering and lighting a world made of 100 billion polygons

So awesome I'm watching them again - I highlly recommend raising the quality to 720p.

Thanks!! will do from home tonight.

Epic's engines are great but have always looked much much better on the PC. Largely due to AA and AF, but now I wonder if they will get in to tessellation etc.

Better GFX is one thing, but something all the console generations that have come before have really underestimated the need for is memory, people forget the 360 only has 512MB, which has a direct knock on effect as to how pretty the game can look too. It seems that this amount was the 'average' a PC had at the time of release without any forethought into the console's shelf life.
The 360 is 6 years old now (and will probably be 8 before the 720 ever sees the light of day), if they expect the next gen to last 10-12 years before the 1080 comes out I'd want a minimum of 12GB in it, easy.
