RUMOUR: ToeJam & Earl Getting Re-Release Treatment

Can you feel the funk? We'd be incredibly psyched for a return to the planet of Funkotron, and so we're rather hoping that this latest rumour is true as reports emerge that SEGA - having given the re-release treatment to Gunstar Heroes and Jet Set Radio - will next be turning to the adventures of ToeJam and Earl.

"ToeJam & Earl and its side-scrolling sequel ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron are slated for re-release as part of Sega’s Vintage Collection," anonymous sources apparently told Siliconera.

And that's about it. SEGA aren't commenting any further.

A glorious colourful roguelike that saw alien rappers looking for bits of their spaceship after crash landing on Earth, ToeJam & Earl was a smashingly surreal satire of 90s pop culture, and a fantastic game that boasted a suitable funktastic soundtrack.

Fingers crossed, please, folks!

I'd like to see them do more with Toejam & Earl that just pump it out as a ROM. Not much more mind - a graphical update and support for online co-op and they'll have a winner I reckon.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Sega already tried to re-release it. They held a vote and Toejam & Earl won - but then Sega realised that they didn't have the rights to that game, so they held another vote and Earthworm Jim won. But then Sega realised that they didn't have the rights to that game either. Then they gave up on the whole idea.

So yeah, an HD-remake would be amazing, if it can happen.

The 3D version and Panic on Funkotron are best forgotten about.
