Ryse: Son of Rome Preview Impressions | God of Bored

The launch of the Xbox One is looming, and so we pause for a moment to take stock of a couple of Microsoft's launch offerings. First up? Ryse: Son of Rome. The first-person game that became a third-person game. The third-person game that became an Xbox One game. The Xbox One game that defied Kinect.

Well, sort of.

Ryse's journey has been one of constantly changing design focuses, conceptual rock jumping, and constant delays. It's finally arriving this November. But is it actually looking any good. We've been hands-on with a small portion of the game a couple of times since it was unveiled in its newest, QTE-stuffed form at E3 this year, and here are a few thoughts ahead of the game's next-gen release.

Yes as a matter of fact I am buying Xbox One and in large part due to the games that I have seen available at launch and shortly thereafter. I believe Ryse may have tricks up its sleeve that will prove to engage us in the single player mode although the multiplayer looks pretty shallow and one-note. God of War is not necessarily the appropriate comparison it focuses much more on a circular sense of fluidity and never-stopping combat. I believe what crytek is going for here is a more linear style of fierce and brutal timing. We shall see......in 25 days

Have you?

If not, and I'm guessing not, how do you know the game is "incredible"?

If you'd said underwhelming I'd have agreed with you.

When I first heard about this I thought it looked pretty crap from the little we knew about it - but that was a long time ago and we've learned a lot more about it since then.

I now believe it's a lot worse than I'd initially feared.

I still kinda want to play it, just to see if I've got it completely wrong. I doubt I have, but I don't like to dismiss it without all the facts. But I ain't paying the best part of fifty quid to confirm my worst suspicions!

Of course everyone's got different tastes (thank gawd) and just because it looks rubbish to me doesn't mean nobody will like it. I'm sure some folk will love it.

I just can't see it selling due to all the competition.

I think you'll possibly see it bundled on day 1 (or at least the first weekend) if there's any Xbones left.

But I do think it looks terrible, and the concept sounds pretty boring too.

When new consoles launch there is always an opportunity for games which aren't really triple A to succeed as part of that minimal amount of launch titles.

Thinking back to the Dreamcast there was Blue Stinger and Tokyo Highway Challenge (we sold so many of those!). The PS2 had Dynasty Warriors and Fantavision (serious WTF?)

Ryse may fall into a similar category which will fill a need during the launch period. Were it released in 3 years time it may not get a look in. It probably won't be dreadful so if you are looking for a nice looking launch title that is a little different, then Ryse could be a good option.
