There’s some serious savings going on over at steam right now, and when they say ‘HD’ we think they really mean High Discount. OK, we’ll stop. But it was just a month ago that Serious Sam HD was discounted to £6.11 on Steam, now it’s down to just under £6, while Amazon and the rest still have it at £14.99 or higher, so you can save a serious £9. If you want to take advantage of the new multiplayer features then on the same page you can grab a four-pack for just £17.98, that’s saving a penny shy of £18 on the original price and almost £6 even over the sale price! So bring your friends along and we can all have fun.
It’d be easy to scoff at Serious Sam, for all the complexity of modern shooters and the depth of story of modern RPGs, a game released back in 2001 will hardly be able to hold a candle up to any of them, right? Wrong. Much akin to Painkiller, a more contemporary game, Serious Sam’s one aim is to give you a big gun, throw legion upon legion of enemies upon you, and let you get on with things. The result was literally a bloody mess and a whole heap of fun.
It leaned very heavily on what Doom and Doom 2 gave us - hordes of enemies to mow down - and whilst it certainly achieved this, it didn’t achieve the other success of Doom, which was to create a tangible atmosphere. Serious Sam tried but the Egyptian theme was never more than a film-set backdrop to the unfolding mayhem.
This modern remake updates all of the graphics but with all the modern trimmings you’d expect, including high-res textures, HDR lighting and depth of field effects. What really gives it replay-value is the new 16 person co-op mode. It might be flawed, and a little bit dated perhaps, but it’s still simple, exhilarating fun and a game that every PC owner should enjoy.
