Forget Bulletstorm. Sure, it's always great to see a shooter put fun on a pedestal, but the venerable Serious Sam series was doing just that back when People Can Fly were learning how to code. Croteam and Devolver Digital have announced that the two downloadable HD Encounters will be bundled onto a single retail disc for a March release, giving you no excuse to not get all kinds of serious. We'll soon have an interview with the Croatian studio about Serious Sam 3, but for now, why not check out this latest SKU?
Serious Sam HD First & Second Encounter will be uproariously slaughtering its way onto store shelves on March 4th, providing UK consumers with another way of getting their hands on its ridiculous blend of hardcore FPS mechanics and arcade-style gameplay. Cast as Sam "Serious" Stone, players will face dozens (and occasionally hundreds) of simultaneous combatants in some of the largest arenas to ever feature in a shooter. Enormous bosses and huge set pieces made the franchise a breath of fresh air in the overly realistic genre, and frankly, it's high time you checked this one out. Did I mention that I'm a fan?
This new version will feature split-screen multiplayer (which was sadly lacking from the downloadable versions) as well as new cooperative modes. The original PC games have been reskinned with Serious Engine 3 that provides crisp HD visuals, though you'll notice some archaic level geometry from time to time.
In my 8/10 review of Serious Sam: The Second Encounter HD, I praised its eyepopping graphics and riotous gameplay, but was dismayed that quicksaving provided a flow-breaking throwback to the bad old days of PC gaming. It works well enough on a rig, but consoles are definitely better off with checkpoints.
We'll be bringing you an interview with Croteam very soon, where we'll be discussing their hotly-anticipated Serious Sam 3: BFE that's slated for a summer release. Keep your eyes peeled.
