SCE Santa Monica Want You To Relate To Kratos In Ascension

God of War: Ascension's game director, Todd Papy, has suggested that Kratos was a bit of a dick at the end of God of War III, but that earlier games, particularly the first one, do display a slightly different side to the vengeful slaphead, and that this is what SCE Santa Monica wanted to bring out by doing a prequel in Ascension.

"With the way that God of War III ended, Kratos, was…um…an a**hole, to say the least.," said Papy, talking to Game Informer. "I think some people connected with him, but it was more of an, 'I've been through this journey with him from the start.' And he wasn't a very likable character, versus God of War 1 – he was still somewhat ruthless, but there was a side to him that you could somewhat relate to. And that was something that I wanted to get across. I felt the best way to do that was going more for a prequel."

We wouldn't worry about Kratos suddenly going all mushy, though. He'll still be ripping the tits of of elephant men and savaging minotaurs with very sharp blades.

suddenly I'm feeling alarmed the best thing about G.O.W was Kratos. He's an uncompromising badass. I don't want to relate to him. I want to leave an unmitigated trail of virtual death an destruction. And laugh about it. We got enough poncy emasculated gaming heroes with quips. Lets hear a quip after I rip off your head and use it as my personal flashlight! (read with tongue in cheek)

I rather agree. Kratos really doesn't need to be a rounded character. Ancient gods were all basically manifestations of base emotions anyway. Kratos = rage... That's all of the identification I need. He doesn't need to be heroic, just angry.

That they're searching for character depth suggests that maybe the trilogy should perhaps have just been left to stand as it was.

I've never particularly thought of Kratos as "likeable" anyway.

Exactly he's not likeable. And he doesn't care. If you did get time to tell him you didn't like him it wouldn't matter as he was gonna make you deepthroat that sword of his either way...
