If you have never before played any of the Monkey Island games, you should definitely give this one a try - it's a classic. Even if you have played it before, it's an excellent one to play again.
I think this was one of the first ever computer games that I played. My memory is a bit faulty now, but it was either this edition or the 2nd game which came on 5 floppy discs. Those were the days, eh!? It was definitely my first ever point-and-click adventure, and also the first time I ever laughed at a computer game.
The script is excellent, the dialogue is brilliant, and the puzzles are fun. However, I do recall the puzzles being incredibly frustrating, when you just couldn't figure out what to do with those rubber chickens, maps and mugs of grog. This was before the days of the interwebs, when you would commonly just google for a walkthrough... so I sometimes spent hours stuck on one damn infuriating puzzle. When I finally solved it though, it was the most obvious solution in the world.
The Secret Of Monkey Island also has quite a few memorable quotes, some of which being:
- That’s the second biggest monkey head I’ve ever seen!
- Look behind you! A three-headed monkey!
- Hmm, a rubber chicken with a pully in the middle. What possible use could that have?
And don't forget, tomorrow is Talk Like A Pirate Day! I was considering writing this whole post in pirate speak, but I thought it would have been rather difficult to read. Maybe I'll just finish it up with a nice little pirate joke, a favourite of mine.
A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel sticking out of his fly. The bartender says "What's the steering wheel for?" The pirate says "ARRRrrrr... It's driving me nuts!"
