The Showdown - SUGGESTIONS

MattGardner |  Jan. 25, 2013 at 12:25

Following on from today's first instalment of The Showdown, we thought we'd create a dedicated thread for the next one, so if you have suggestions - series face offs, gaming grudge matches, mascot rivalries etc. - this is the place to put them.

Doesn't have to be games, could be consoles, characters, controllers, developers, but they do have to be relevant to one another.

Let us know what you'd like to see next in the verbal Thunderdome, and we'll concoct an stew of the best ideas. And if you fancy championing your cause against a Dealspwn staffer, this is the place to register your interest.

Surely you have to do the greats first?

Super Mario World and Sonic 2

After that, you can filter down to anything.:)

For some suggestions:

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark
Megaman X and Super Probotector
Zelda 3 and Alundra
Duke Nukem 3D and Doom 2

I'll skip consoles because the suggestions there are mainly obvious.
Game wise:
COD v Battlefield
FF7 v FF8
GTA v all takers

If you're going to compare FF7, then you'd have to put it against the one of the other favourites, rather than 8. I'd guess either 6 or 9.

Skyrim vs. Dark Souls
Console vs. PC
Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band (I will happily defend Rock Band to the end)
Assassin's Creed 3 vs. repeatedly punching yourself in the face (again, happy to defend the latter)
Daddy vs. Chips

A few more:
Online vs. Local multiplayer
God of War vs. Gears of War (vs hair metal band Manowar, if possible)
Football Manager vs. actual human contact

God of War vs. Gears of War

Skyrim vs. Dark Souls

I thought the idea was to compare similar products..?

God of War is more akin to Bayonetta or Dante's Inferno, and Skyrim would be more akin to Far Cry 3 or Dead Island.

Daddy vs. Chips

Quite possibly the best thing I've read today! Good man!

Now that's a proper blast from the past.

Some good suggestions here...FFVII vs FFVIII is a classic, and Super Mario World vs Sonic the Hedgehog (1 or 2...that itself is open to debate) is a fundamental necessity. I actually started penning a mini op piece on local multiplayer last year, so the local vs online debate is certainly something that we can have. Others submissions we've received thus far (and one or two of our own):

- Lara Croft vs. Nathan Drake (one for TR's reboot release week methinks)
- Samus vs Master Chief
- SF vs Tekken
- WOW vs EVE
- Sam Fisher vs Solid Snake
- Bastila vs Morrigan
- Forza vs Gran Turismo
- Guns vs Swords
- Romance in RPGs: Yes or No
- Resistance vs Gears
- Killzone vs Halo
- Leon Kennedy vs Chris Redfield

There's nothing to stop future instalments of The Showdown simply being two perspectives over one topic. Demon/Dark Souls, for example, can be incredibly divisive, so too games like Deadly Premonition, entire genres such as JRPGs, or even thematic material like, as someone suggested via email, romance in RPGs or cover systems in shooting games.

We'll be mulling a whole bunch of this stuff over this weekend. In the meantime, keep those suggestions coming!

Speaking of JRPGs... real time combat or turn based.

I detest the former, personally.

I like the cover system idea...something like Vanquish vs Gears might be better than Resistance. I came up with a few:

Tifa vs Aerith
Cloud vs Squall
Sensible Soccer vs NBA Jam
Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat
Bowser vs Robotnik

Like the COD/BF and Guitar Hero/Rock Band ideas too.

Hey Matt - of the above suggestions I am up for championing:
Super Mario World
Dark Souls
and FF9 against ANYTHING!

Here are examples of some games articles I have written on my blog:
Let me know!
