Sony Hints At Offline Co-Op For Diablo 3

No Internet Connection Needed?

Remember all that rage that was shown towards Blizzard for requiring players to have an internet connection to play Diablo 3, regardless of whether they were playing solo or not? Well, the recently announced console version may well be scrapping that requirement, if an interview with Sony’s John Hight is to be believed.

In a post Playstation Meeting interview with Geoff “Doritos” Keighley for Game Trailers, Hight was explaining the features of the that separate the upcoming console version from its PC brethren, detailing how the local co-op will zoom the camera out to keep all the characters in view, but they he says something rather interesting… “or if you’re offline-” at which point Keighley interrupts and inadvertently changes the subject.

The interview segment also makes mention of a new evade system that will be used “so you can move quickly out of the way,” but the details beyond that were lacking. We can expect to see more details on the Playstation 3 / 4 version after PAX East in March, so we should have many more details for Blizzard’s return to the console side of the industry then. What do you mean, "hints at"? They confirmed four-player offline co-op during the show. The headline makes no sense - it seems to have no relevance to the rest of the article.

Having re-watched Chris Metzen's address at the Playstation Meeting, which you can find in the BlizzPlanetGaming link in the article, he at no point specifies D3 for PS3/4 being capable of a completely offline experience, unlike its PC counterpart where you must login to their servers to play.

Metzen states that it will have local co-op on a single screen for up to 4 players, but as this is the first mention of "offline" in regards to D3, and the fact Hight was cut off before it could be clarified / explained (thus the "hints at" bit, it hasn't really been confirmed since by Sony or Blizzard) we felt it was worth posting.
