Sony: PS3 Has Plenty Of Sticking Power, But Will 'Fade More Quickly In The UK'

Sony Computer Entertainment VP Fergal Gara is confident that the PS3 will continue to thrive for "some time to come" despite the release of its successor, though us Brits will likely move on quicker than other territories due to our "huge taste in new tech."

"In terms of the life of the PS3, I think it’s there for some time to come, I think it’s got an amazing line-up of games this year which is really healthy," Gara told OPM, referring to the likes of Beyond: Two Souls, Puppeteer, Rain and Gran Turismo 6.

"I also think we’ll see a different phasing of success emerge this year from PS3 versus PS4. So you know I would expect it to fade a little more quickly in the UK which is a highly networked country with a huge taste in new tech.”

"Achieving a strong install base is always very, very important in a console’s life. And we’ll be as focused, if not more focused, on that this time versus any previous generation, in particular starting with an attractive price-point that’s going to help us on that journey. So we’re delighted we’re looking in good shape on that front."

If only we had some savvy UK gamers to ask about whether they'll continue to support the PS3, ignore it in favour of the PS4 or use both over the coming year. Oh wait. We do. Thoughts, everyone?

Personally I pre-ordered the PS4 and I am going to be keeping both, but the PS3 may end up in the bedroom due to lack of space under my TV.

My Mum has officially announced that she's not going to get the PS4 on release day however, so she will probably continue to support the PS3 for a while longer.

Or at least until she comes over mine and decides she wants to steal all my games for the PS4 so must have one.

None of my mates have pre-ordered the PS4... just me. Though that is the one everyone is talking about getting, no one wants the Xbox.

I want to get a PS4 but there's no launch titles for it that actually interest me. Deep Down would but it's not even got a launch date. At the moment all the launch titles look to be sequels and third person shooters. Even Knack looks a bit cack. Driveclub would be the only thing that could possibly get my attention., but looks like another Forza Horizon type game where you try to make your own fun via online matches.

Not this year, but will probably move across to xbox. The ads detailing the annoying social aspects are really worrying me. I also believe Sony are incapable of managing the infrastructure needed to make PS plus scale to anywhere near what it should be.
But, sticking with the status quo to give it some time to see. no early adopter this time.

I'm on the fence - I want a next-gen console, and there's a strong appeal of buying on launch day for the first time ever, but in reality I'll probably still be playing GTA5, Dark Souls 2 and the rest of my current-gen backlog this time next year
