Sony: Retail Will Still Be Important For The Next Generation

Despite digital distribution being the next console generation's rallying cry, Sony reckons that high street and online boxed game retail will still be important for the PS4.

"Coming down off that 2008 peak has been a steep ride for many and has involved fallout on many levels, not least of all retail," Sony UK boss Fergal Gara told MCV, acknowledging that the recession has been fairly rough for traditional retail, market forces having nearly collapsed the UKs major high street retailer earlier this year. However, he also believes that the next console generation will act as a cash "injection," and hopes that traditional retailers will continue to support boxed game sales over the PS4's life cycle.

"We'd love to see as many of those retailers as possible maintain their interest in servicing the space because clearly down the road many of us are going to be doing our best to give another injection into the market whenever the next cycle starts," he concluded.

However, on the digital front, it will be interesting to see what Gaikai brings to the table.

I currently have no interest in buying any console ever again.

I got the Xbox and Xbox 360 on release day.

I was planning to get a PS2 when that first came but it was NOWHERE near as good as my PC at the time - so I didn't.

Cool story bro. Your point is a very valid one in the debate on retail stores vs digital distribution.
