Sony UK: 'We Still Have A Bit Of A PS2 Hangover'

SCE UK has gotten itself a new boss in the shape of Fergal Gara and, according to the recently appointed head, the company could use a little bit of sharpening up to ensure they become leader of the pack once more.

“What I find at SCE is that we’ve lots of passionate and committed people. But there’s definitely an opportunity to up the pace of our competitiveness,” said Gara, talking to MCV.

“We still have a bit of a hangover – at least in the UK company – from the days of being market dominant. I don’t think we are as sharp as we can be. There’s room for improvement there.

“So it’s not change everything, but it is turn up the dial, and learn to compete as I have experience doing myself.”

Some of that experience has come from mixing it up in the world of supermarket retail, and Gara is under no illusions about the tough job that faces him, noting the "cutthroat" nature of the UK retail landscape.

“The UK retail environment is renowned for being the most competitive in the world. And if you take the supermarket end of that, that’s as blood bath as you can get,” continued Gara.

“One thing you gain from that market is a competitiveness; you have to have it, plus an immediacy. You don’t hang around and wait to react. I am used to daily numbers – if not hourly numbers – so if we were launching a big gaming title we would be on top of the numbers by the hour.

“We’d be the first in with a re-order. And that’s really exciting.” [MCV]

I certainly noticed a difference in the UK in terms of Playstation 3 advertising, initially there was a bit but it tailed off and then it was mostly 360 adverts and even when a game was multiplatform it still had the 360 as the main platform. Lately I have seen a bit more in terms of bus ads or roadside adverts but unless I was unlucky I think the TV advertising was far less that for games in the ps2 days.

Just hope there is a decent launch for the Vita.

@gunnx I think it depends what you take notice off and which channels you watch, I notice far more PS ads than xbox cos they sponsor movies on TV maybe its just im so used to seeing shoddy kinect ads that i block them out now but if that was the case im sure nathan drakes smug face wouldnt bother me as much as i would do the same for that... :/

Ive noticed the movie sponsoring recently and games too but it was just after post launch, I didnt see much TV coverage, but perhaps TV isnt the medium of choice for results anyway.
