Sony: Vita Will Have Optional External Battery

Three to five hours is a frankly unacceptable battery limit for a handheld device. We got rather angry when we heard that the Vita would be following in the 3DS' footsteps in terms of daily lifespan - it is virtually inexcusable when you think about it.

Thankfully, though, Sony appear to have noticed this. At TGS, Shuhei Yoshida, President of SCEO Worldwide, confirmed to IGN that the Vita will offer an extended external battery option. 'If you're flying from New York to San Francisco, or vice-versa,' said Yoshida, you'll have no concerns if you have an additional, external battery.'

No news on specifics yet, we'll want to see the lifespan doubled at the very least, and no price point yet. But if it launches in conjunction with the Vita, we rather expect it to be one of the more popular peripherals of the season.

Thinking of picking a Vita up when it comes out over here? Does this new tidbit of battery-powered news sway you if you're a sceptic? Let us know in the comments below.

not sure its fully inexcusable, I mean battery technology just isn't keeping up with the demand on power. And noone wants to carry about a huge brick either. Luckily I won't need to keep my Vita unplugged, but even so three to five hours would cover most people's commute to work / long car journey.

battery life is fine, how can you expect massive amounts of battery when this is almost as powerful as a console.

vita is looking extremely good now, can't wait for it to come out

I personally have to agree with Matt, 3-5 hours just isn't enough to handle a day out, plane journey or even both legs of a long commute. Portable consoles should be portable. It's not enough to put me off a purchase (not even close), but one wonders whether Sony has scrimped on the battery to keep prices down and flog us an optional external accessory that will help recoup some of the Vita's massive manufacturing costs.
