Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny £4.99 @ GAME and Gamestation [PSP Games]

It's not often that high street stores trump the likes of Play and ShopTo, but GAME and Gamestation have slashed the price of Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny down to under a fiver. This is less than half the price of Play.com, it's nearest competitor, and is a fantastic deal for a great PSP exclusive. Depending on whether you've got a loyalty card, you've got two choices...

Soul Calibur is generally reckoned to be one of the heaviest hitters in the Fighting genre, and Broken Destiny perfectly emulates its unmistakable blend of deep tactics and frantic button mashing on the PSP. The graphics are detailed yet maintains a solid framerate, the action is fluid and the characters behave exactly as you'd expect: all the combos are right where where you need them.

Soul Calibur releases also have a habit of including famous guest characters, and Broken Destiny is no exception. Sony fans will rejoice as Kratos (the brutal Spartan antihero from the God of War franchise) takes out his deep frustrations on the cast of usual suspects. Unlike Yoda and Darth Vader, Kratos is a perfect fit for the franchise as his signature Blades of Chaos provide a range of nuanced attacks and different engagement ranges. Oh, and he's also awesome.

It's not perfect. The lack of a coherent story and surprisingly meagre set of unlockables severely limits the singleplayer shenanigans- but then again, at this price it doesn't really matter. If you want something to amuse yourself on the train and have £5 to spend, you've got two choices. If you want a deep, meaningful story then buy a book. If you want to experience classic Soul Calibur action on a handheld then buy Broken Destiny. Fans of fighting games will not be disappointed.
