Frostbite 3-Powered Racer Revs Up In November
Need For Speed: Rivals has officially broken cover. The Ghost Games-developed racer is powered by Frostbite 3, allows players to choose between cops or street racers and promises "the freedom to seamlessly go from single player to co-op to multiplayer."
As a cross-generation title, Need for Speed: Rivals will release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in November, followed by PS4 and Xbox One versions when the consoles launch. We've got more details, screenshots and a teaser trailer below.
Need for Speed: Rivals lets players assume the role of a police officer or reckless racer, both of which offer different challenges and rewards. Racers will apparently vie for infamy by recording evidence of dangerous driving, which we assume will be easily shared using the PS4's social features and Xbox One DVR. Cops, conversely, will take down the law-breaking thrillseekers and receive, all while working as a team.
From the press release: The more cops players evade, the more Speedpoints they collect, enabling them to unlock new cars and items. Keep raising the stakes race after race, earning more and more Speedpoints along the way and becoming a more valuable target to the cops - but risk losing it all if busted. As a cop, players work together as part of a team in pursuit of racers, earning prominence and rising in the ranks of the Police Force with every bust. Achieving higher ranks unlocks new police only cars and more powerful pursuit tech.
Autolog will naturally make its stat-tracking return, but Need For Speed: Rivals also debuts a new feature - AllDrive. Singleplayer races can become tense multiplayer grudge matches as other players enter on the fly, or police officers will find themselves suddenly chasing real people and backed up by human squadmates. Think 'drop-in' competitive and co-op multiplayer, all the time.
"The Need for Speed franchise has been an industry leader bringing social competition to the forefront in games," said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer, Ghosts Games. "For the first time, players will have the freedom to seamlessly go from single player to co-op to multiplayer. In Need for Speed Rivals we are creating one game experience with one progression, where the freedom to play with friends is more fluid and accessible than ever before."
Need For Speed: Rivals has been dated for November 19th on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 (likely November 22nd in Europe), and formally announced for PS4 and Xbox One.
