If you really resent it when developers rerelease games with a few, fairly minor little extras, and then slap an extortionate price tag on, but at the same time, can’t resist having that ‘special edition’ box in your collection, you can currently pick up a copy of Need for Speed: Shift ‘Special Edition’ for £22.99 from Gameplay. This is a definitely a good price when you consider that most other retailers are flogging this particular version for just over £30.
The ‘Special Edition’ of Shift includes a few little extras. You get a special box, a poster, and some extra content consisting of an unlockable BMW M3 GT2 car and special series race. Of course, many gamers won’t see this as a particularly worthwhile purchase – after all standard versions of Shift are now going for under £15 – but this deal may have some resonance if you’re a real NFS fanatic.
If you’ve not experienced Shift however, it’s easily one of the best presented racing simulators on market. Developers Slightly Mad have regressed back to NFS’ track racer roots, completely cutting out the open-world format, the police chases and the cheesy storyline to produce a driving sim that’s as polished as they come. The first person cockpit view, sense of speed, and piercing engine roars, make Shift – for me anyway - one of the most vivid and enjoyable racers I’ve ever played. The star point system is a bit meaningless, and it could have done with a wider selection of cars, but Shift is spot on when it comes to the actual experience of racing.
