If you’re aware of its problems but still willing to pick up Need for Speed Undercover for the sheer entertainment value, copies are currently going for just £4.93 at The Hut. This is a good price which beats the next best deal by just under £3.
While NFS SHIFT was a title which just oozed quality and style, unfortunately, Undercover basically sums up everything that was going so wrong for the franchise. Even aside from the cheesy storyline and horrendous cut scenes, this is a game plagued by a ton of technical and design problems. The open-world format feels redundant as there’s little to no incentive for the player to go exploring. When you start races all intersecting lanes are closed off which means there’s no traffic to deal with, and overall the game just doesn’t feel challenging.
It’s easy to see why developers Simply Mad decided to cut the whole open-world format loose and revert back to the series’ track racer roots in SHIFT. However that said, running from the cops is good for a giggle in Undercover, and the online cops and robbers mode can be good fun. If it wasn’t for the game’s poor presentation and its slow frame rate, it might not have had such a damning reception.
As it stands, Undercover is a title which will probably annoy those who expect a lot more from their racing games. But for anyone willing to take this one ‘warts and all’ and overlook a few flaws, it has enough good moments to keep you going through what remains of the Easter break. And is certainly one to consider if you happen to be on a budget.
