Based upon the recent Hollywood film, The Spiderwick Chronicles is an adventure game which - as whoever posted this deal on HUKD rightly pointed out – offers parents a good way to occupy their kids over the summer holidays. Currently copies of the game are going for £4.99 at Toys R’ Us which gives you a nice saving on the next best price offered by Coolshop of £8.49.
The story behind The Spiderwick Chronicles is almost like a cross between Harry Potter and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. After reading a mysterious book owned by his uncle, a young boy called Jared unwittingly discovers the entrance to a fantasy world filled with all sorts of magical creatures. However, after being alerted by the presence of Jared and his friends, evil beings begin to swarm through the void. The children are then hurled into a deadly struggle against goblins and ogres, and must attempt to capture fairies to unlock various powers.
However when transposed onto an Xbox 360 game, The Spiderwick Chronicles is little more than a mildly entertaining follow to the movie. The game includes a lot of footage which is taken directly from the film, and with its stunning CGI, only makes the static, low budget computer game visuals of the 360 adaptation pale in comparison.
Things are made worse by a cumbersome control system which, during combat, is in dire need of a targeting system. But all in all, the game offers no real challenge to players over the age of ten. However there is fun to got out of The Spiderwick Chronicles for anyone under that age, and when compared to dreadful film-to-game adaptations like The Golden Compass, perhaps it’s not that bad after all…
