Square Enix is set to announce a new Final Fantasy XIII title this September as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations, codenamed "Lightning Saga."
According to Famitsu magazine [via, as ever, Andriasang], Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase let a few choice details slip about a brand new Final Fantasy game set in the Final Fantasy XIII universe. Currently in development under the working title of 'Lightning Saga,' this project is set for a full reveal during a special anniversary event on September 1st.
There's an outside chance that Lightning Saga could turn out to be Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but the explicit mention of protagonist Lightning's name seems to put paid to that idea. However, Square recently squashed rumours about Versus XIII's demise, so a reveal isn't out of the question alongside this new tie-in.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is generally considered to be a major step forward for the shaky original, so here's hoping that another iteration can push the bar.
