SSX Multiplayer Playable Without Online Pass

In-Game Credits Locked Instead

EA seems to be wildly experimenting with the Online Pass concept at the moment. While singleplayer-centric Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning plans to lock off solo levels if you didn't buy new, SSX will let you play its online multiplayer even with a pre-owned copy. Rather than unlocking content, the online pass will instead unlock in-game credits awarded for placing in the top three - which are stockpiled behind the scenes until you activate the code. It's an interesting idea that many players may find more palateable than past efforts, and we've got a full statement below.

EA confirmed and explains the setup in a statement made to Game Informer.

In SSX, players without an Online Pass are able to compete and play in both of SSX's online game modes, Explore and Global Events with no restrictions. In Global Events, the top finishers from each event are awarded with in-game credits. These in-game credits earned during play will not be awarded to the player if they do not have an Online Pass; these credits will be stored so that at any time, if a player redeems an Online Pass code, all the credits that they had previously earned in Global Events will be immediately awarded to them.

Economy balance makes it possible to unlock all available content and allows you to participate in all event drops across both Explore and Global Events, with credits earned solely in Explore.

What say you, gamers? Is this the way forward for online passes?

Instead of gimmicky online passes that all do the same thing (render the game incomplete without one) I'd accept an online pass in exchange for EA not ripping half the content out of the game pre-release and selling it off as "DLC" within a week of the launch date.
