Star Trek Online Launches Free-To-Play January 17th

Current and Former Subscribers Able To Play From Today

After months of preparation, Star Trek Online will re-open the shuttle bay doors as a Freemium MMORPG from the 17th of this month. Current and former subscribers can jump right in from today, allowing them to check out the changes Cryptic Studios have unleashed.

Monthly and Lifetime subscribers will find the game mostly unchanged for them as a Gold Member, with additional perks available as a thank you. Meanwhile, Silver Players will have certain restrictions placed upon them, such as smaller bank slots, limited chat features, and lower priority in server queues. All players will have access to all missions and sectors, as well as be able to reach the maximum level.

The move to the Free-mium model also introduces the in-game store, similar to Cryptic’s other MMO Champions Online. Here extra Bridge Officer slots, XP multipliers, and addition cosmetic extras will be available for purchase. You can check out all of the changes on the official website here.

Developers Cryptic and new owners Perfect World Entertainment will be hoping the change in format reinvigorates the online title after a lacklustre launch that was criticised for its lack of content at end-game and within the Klingon faction. There have been many content additions since launch, including new missions and the Forge; a mission generator allowing players to create their own adventures.

Yay, thanks for the heads up. I was a day one subscriber but didn't continue as the content then was poor at best. Been waiting with baited breath to give it another go when it went f2p
