Video footage has emerged of a project that was under development at LucasArts in the months before the studio was canned by Disney. The project was codenamed "Version Two" and the video showcases Empire and Rebel forces fighting over large battlefields, liberally strewn with Star Wars vehicles.
Multiple sources have suggested that it's Battlefront III.
According to Kotaku, "LucasArts staff were working on three projects: Star Wars: First Assault, Star Wars 1313, and a smaller project internally referred to as 'Version Two', according to two sources familiar with the situation."
Star Wars: First Assault - the XBLA/PSN title that was being readied for a digital release - didn't have vehicles in it, yet Version Two did. According to the sources,, that's because the company was looking to turn Version Two into the third instalment of the popular Battlefront series.
“[There’s] a very vocal audience that's clamoring for Battlefront III,” said one of Kotaku's sources. “We were hoping to eventually give it to them.”
Unfortunately, it seems like the writing was on the wall for some time, and the first large warning sign for Kotaku's sources came after Disney failed to capitalise on the First Assault leak.
“When Disney didn’t make lemonade out of lemons there, they didn’t use that as a marketing opportunity. They didn’t do anything,” a source said.
The day after the leak, the source revealed that Disney held a company-wide meeting.
“They said ‘Okay, look, if anything else happens, we’re gonna take legal action, we’re gonna find you,’” the source said. “Nobody wants Lucas and Disney lawyers coming after them... nobody could even publicly acknowledge that the stuff [Kotaku was] showing was tied to us in any way.”
Now all we have is this gameplay footage, which looks amazing. We won't host it on Dealspwn out of common decency, but you can find it here.
