Star Wars: Disney and EA Sign Exclusive, Multi-Year Publishing Deal

EA has announced a new partnership with Disney, in an exclusive deal that will see the likes of BioWare, DICE, and Visceral Games creating new Star Wars titles for the next few years.

This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come,” said John Pleasants, Co-President of Disney Interactive. “Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world.”

According to a press release issued by EA, Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories as EA seeks to develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a "core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres".

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

We've been raving about the possibility of a DICE-fronted Battlefront-esque Star Wars title. And here's hoping that EA allow BioWare to actually craft something new too. *cough KOTOR 3 please *cough* It's not infeasible that Star Wars 1313 might see some semblance of a resurrection under Visceral too.

That said, we'd have much preferred Disney to have issued out the Star Wars licence on a case-by-case basis as, let's face it, a Bethesda-front, Boba-Fett-meets-Prey 2, bounty hutning space-opera mashup would have been super sweet.

Definitely let us know what you make of this one, and for the love of <insert deity/fictional alien overlord here> Disney/EA, let's have some freaking re-releases please!

Oh Disney. Licensing each specific game to an appropriate publisher and developer could have made for a new lease of life for Star Wars. But instead, you've just given it all to one company.

Don't get me wrong, EA has the studios and infrastructure to accomplish great things here. I'm not 'EA-bashing' or whatever the cool kids are calling it nowadays, but I just think that Disney should have been more selective with the rights and allowed multiple pubs/developers access to the IP, creating a diverse and exciting range of games in the process.

"Disney/EA, let's have some freaking re-releases please!"

I have a bad feeling about this.

Frankly, I've not played a decent star wars game in years.battlefront was OK. That Bounty Hunter game with Jango Fett was utter ****, so a Boba Fett one wouldn't be much better IMO.

This is probably the nail in the coffin for Mirror's Edge 2 now.
