Depends really on your preferred playstyle - heavy melee, light melee, heavy magic, magic/melee mix etc...

You get enough experience points to go in any directions the further you get into the game so if you decide to change later you can.
I started as a heavily armoured tank character (knight) but was using magic and pyromancy regularly as well towards the end - im just about to get the platinum!

have fun!

Pyromancer is a great class, low level but good stats with ok Melee.

Wanderer and Pyromancer are the best starting classes IMO, sorceror the worst.

Pyromancer definitely, I've platinumed the game with one. If you level up the pyromancer hand and have the bellowing dragon ring by mid game it becomes really easy by just firing off fireballs and fire orbs. Also don't worry too much about the beginning class as you can easily 'switch' just by concentrating more on the stats you want. What you do want to do though is choose the Master Key as your starting gift, most of the rest of the items are pretty useless or available to buy whereas the master key opens a lot of doors that would otherwise be very hard to find the keys for.
