Start your pre-order engines! This one’s for all the RTS junkies out there, as finally we can look forwards to a sequel for the frankly rocking Supreme Commander. Promising to be more streamlined than the first game, and out on 5th March, Game is offering this for almost £5 less than most other retailers, with Amazon and The HUT closest at £24.73.
The original was vast in its scope, with more than 300 units to choose from and some of the biggest robots to grace a PC screen - it was RTS on a grandiose scale. It seems the single design goal for Supreme Commander 2 is to streamline the whole experience. Reducing the total number of units from 300 to 120 makes for a more focused approach, with each unit having a definitive purpose for existing. Map size is being reduced, as is the construction and research process, all of which makes for an RTS that’s more accessible to newcomers.
It could lose hardcore fans of the original who revel in the complexity and size of the maps, but they’ll be missing out on the updated engine that’s been fine tuned to handle the vast battles that Supreme Commander is all about. On a less favourable note Eurogamer was reporting that the single-player game could be something of a giggle with less than stellar script writing, but when the description of a game starts “25 years after the end of the Infinite War” what do you expect? 25 years after infinity, really? To infinity and beyond indeed!
