In a post on the official forums, BioWare heads Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka have revealed that there have been layoffs in the development team for MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic. At the moment the number of redundancies is unclear, but early reports suggest the number is fairly significant.
In the statement, it was revealed that the “restructuring” was regretful, but those affected are being “treated with dignity, fairness and respect” and will be receiving support from EA in this troubling time. However, it was made clear that BioWare intend to keep moving forward with SWTOR, and that it is business as usual for the rest of the team.
“We still have a very substantial development team working on supporting and growing the game, and we feel we are in a strong position, with your continued involvement and feedback, to continue to build Star Wars: The Old Republic as one of the most compelling and successful online experiences in the world today. There are many strong initiatives planned for cool new content and new features that we’re excited to tell you about in the upcoming weeks and months.”
Word on the internet is that the “unknown” number of layoffs is, in reality, fairly significant, as a former member of the QA team revealed on Twitter that their entire team has been affected. That said, it has been confirmed that everyone who has been given their marching orders are contracted up until June 5th. We expect we will be hearing more news on the layoffs over the next 24 hours, including just how high up the chain of command the redundancies have gone.
