"We Want As Little Barriers To Entry As Possible"
EA has confirmed that Starbreeze's upcoming Syndicate reboot will not ship with an online pass - and all multiplayer functionality will be unlocked regardless of whether you buy a new or preowned version. Apparently they're confident that players will enjoy the cooperative modes enough to not trade it in, which is actually rather refreshing logic to us. Full story after the break.
EA Partners boss Jeff Gamon confirmed Syndicate's lack of an online pass to Eurogamer.
We want as little resistance or barriers to entry as possible. The co-op is equal billing in this. We wanted everyone who owns a copy of the game to have access to the entire product.
Under normal circumstances it would have had an online pass, but because it didn't have competitive multiplayer and because we wanted as many people as possible to be playing co-op, we got away with it.
We like this logic immensely. Gamon continued by suggesting that Online Passes, which are used to claw back lost revenue from pre-owned sales, wouldn't be necessary as the multiplayer may be addictive enough to stop gamers trading in.
Maybe another reason for not having the Online Pass is we were confident in the scope of the online game.
There are nine maps. It's hard to say, but just to play through the maps once on normal is a good six, seven hours. To progress your character and upgrade a few weapons is a heap of content. That and the single-player campaign means hopefully we won't see much in the way of early second hand sales and rentals.
I daresay that many gamers will look kindly on Syndicate just because of its lack of an online pass. Interestingly, EA have been wildly experimenting with the conceptover the last fortnight - since Kingdoms Of Amalur will lock off singleplayer content while SSX plans to only bar pre-owned consumers from virtual currency.
