Dungeon Of The Endless Review | Mashup Masterpiece

Platform: PC (reviewed) | Xbox One version TBA

Developer: Amplitude Studios

Don't call it a Roguelike. Dungeon Of The Endless may feature permadeath and dungeon crawling, but one word can't do justice to this extraordinary genre-defying beast. To take a stab at pigeonholing it, I suppose that 'Real-Time Turn-Based Strategic 4X Tower Defence Roguelike RPG hybrid' is probably the closest I can get.

So the first thing you need to know is that Dungeon Of The Endless uses traditional Roguelike genre staples as a launchpad for a totally fresh and unique Sci-Fi experience that continually switches up the pace and challenge in exciting new ways.

The second and most important thing you need to know, however, is that it's absolutely bloody fantastic. Dungeon Of The Endless was already impressive when Ampltude Studios released the alpha last year, and has only grown stronger due to user feedback and honest painstaking hard work. I'm having trouble finding anything remotely wrong with it, but explaining how all of its crazy genre-blending systems interlock will take some doing.

In this week's episode of Game Night, Carl and Jon try their luck at surviving Dungeon Of The Endless, the current Early Access project from Amplitude Studios. Part RPG, part roguelike, part 4X strategy, and all parts punishing, see how this genre-mash-up is shaping up whilst the duo flee in fear from huge hordes of enemies.

Be sure to check out Jon's hands-on impressions of Dungeon of the Endless here.

Endless Legend Review | Stranger Civilizations

Platform: PC (Steam, £26.99)

Developer: Amplitude Studios

Early Access has been dragged through the mud over the last few months, but it often doesn't get enough credit. For every failure there's a developer who makes a plan and sticks to it, engages fans without losing sight of their goals, then finally delivers a worthwhile game that couldn't have been made any other way. The system works.

Endless Legend is one of those success stories: a superb, solid and delightfully innovative take on the 4X genre from Amplitude Studios, the fearsome strategy fiends behind the excellent Endless Space and upcoming Roguelike masterclass Dungeon Of The Endless. As you've probably worked out by now, all three games take place at different times in the same universe, a sensational Sci-Fi fantasy fusion that kicks out elves and dwarves in favour of aliens, constructs, mad cultists, robot ghosts and necrophagous insects. It's a beautiful thing, both in terms of the overall aesthetic and some exciting design decisions.

Endless Legend Review | Stranger Civilizations

I'm going to assume that you have a working knowledge of 4X games, preferably hex-based specimens like Civilization, Warlock and Age Of Wonders III, because otherwise this review is going to require several hundred words to explain the basic mechanics. To briefly recap, Endless Legend subscribes to a familiar basic formula of picking a race with different stats, starting out with a settler, building a city and then cracking on with the four Xs: exploration, expansion, exploitation and extermination . You'll research new technologies, move units around a hex-based world, engage in diplomacy and generally rise to dominance through fair means and foul.

Here's the instruction manual if you want to know more. Rather than dwelling on minutae, we're going to discuss how Endless Legend subverts and reinvigorates the familiar genre template with fresh new ideas.

Dungeon Of The Endless Early Access Preview | Explore, Defend, Run Like Hell!

Platform: PC

Developer: Amplitude Studios

Dungeon Of The Endless is incredibly tough. It's unpredictable. Beautiful. And breathes new life into the roguelike and tower defence genres, even though it's still only in alpha.

Amplitude Studios aren't known for sitting on their laurels. Having supported their superb 4X title Endless Space with masses of free and weighty paid DLC (the card-based ship combat is awesome, end of), they launched into a new venture that provides a intimate new perspective on the hard sci-fi universe. Arriving just before Christmas as an early access title, Dungeon of the Endless is already shaping up to be something rather special.

Dungeon Of The Endless Early Access Preview | Explore, Defend, Run Like Hell!

So what is it? On a basic level, Dungeon Of The Endless - which I'm not going to abbreviate to DotE to avoid any confusion - strands players on a mysterious planet, controlling survivors of a crashed prison ship. We have to lead our troops through randomly-generated dungeons in a blend of RTS and exploration gameplay, all while securing resources and territory to defend with turrets and fortifications. It's an unpredictable balance of offence, exploration, defence, Roguelike and strategy that constantly hits you where you least expect it... followed by a mad dash at the end of each level as hellacious enemy legions close in for the kill.

Just in case that wasn't enough, it also happens to look utterly ravishing.

Dungeon Of The Endless Video Impressions | Early Access To A Hardcore Sci-Fi Stunner

Dungeon Of The Endless may only be in early access, but Amplitude Studios' genre hybrid already looks beautiful and plays beautifully.

Halfway between a roguelike and a dungeon defence game, you'll lead a team of heroes though procedurally-generated levels, exploring and gradually uncovering unpredictable environments full of traps and deadly creatures. However, you'll also have to defend a crystal to stay alive: a power generator that lets you transform the dungeon into a powerful fortification bristling with turrets and defences. Constantly changing pace and hitting you where you least expect, this is very much more than the sum of its already-impressive RPG, roguelike, strategy and defensive parts; including elements we'd only traditionally expect from 4X games. Well, they did develop Endless Space after all.

Not to put too fine a point on things, but Dungeon of The Endless also looks drop-dead gorgeous despite being v.0.1.3.

You don't have to take my word for it, since I've recorded some video impressions for your eager delectation. This is very much a first contact video recorded in effectively one take (including live voiceover), so more detailed intel will follow soon!

Endless Space Devs Tease Dungeon Of The Endless

Amplitude Studios, the team behind sensational 4X game Endless Space, are working on a new game entitled Dungeon Of The Endless. By the looks of things, it's set to be a low-fi Sci-fi dungeon crawler, if not a roguelike.

Details are purposefully thin on the ground, since Amplitude are planning to reveal all at Gamescom. For now, enjoy the teaser trailer below.

Endless Space: Emperor Special Edition | £13.48 | GamersGate | PC

GamersGate's Spring Sale is now underway, and offers a huge saving for Endless Space's Emperor Edition. Though some of the extras are rather redundant now that the game has shipped (like your forum name in the credits), this 4X extravaganza is definitely worth picking up, even if you hold off for a cheaper deal on the standard version.

You can knock off a little extra with the "elder-geek.com" voucher code.

Endless Space Shifts 300,000 Copies, Gets Free Expansion & Steam Sale

Brilliant 4X strategy game Endless Space has managed to sell over 300,000 copies since its launch last year. To celebrate, Amplitude Studios have released a free update that adds new buildings, technology, heroes, events, fixes and more. Virtual Awakening will install automatically on Steam when you next log in.

If that wasn't enough, Endless Space is 50% off on Steam - starting now [UPDATE: This happened sooner than we predicted, which is no bad thing]. We described Endless Space as "Orion's new master" in our 9/10 review, and we've got more details about Virtual Awakening below.

Endless Space: Emperor Edition | £10.80 | Green Man Gaming | PC

Endless Space is a truly brilliant 4X game: deep, addictive, infinitely customisable and (shock horror) actually easy to use. You can tailor every aspect of the experience to suit your whims, from the makeup of the galaxy to the traits and weaknesses of your own personal alien race.

GMG's voucher code deal brings the weighty Emperor Edition down to the same price as the standard (Admiral) version usually gets to during sales. Nice.

Despite being unwilling to match their £7.82 deal from last November (that was probably a misprice considering how quickly it was changed), GamersGate are touting a £3 saving.

Endless Space | £11.49 / Free Weekend | Steam | PC

As we foretold in a post yesterday, Endless Space is the weekend deal on Steam starting today, dropping the price and allowing everyone to give it a try for the duration. Admittedly, the sale price isn’t as good as the recent deal we highlighted from Gamersgate, but it’s the lowest price by a fair margin at the time of writing.

Jon described Endless Space as a “sensational 4X title” in his review, and it’s hard to disagree with the assessment. The fleet combat may be lacking somewhat, but everything else is an absolute gem. We strongly recommend giving it a try while you’re able to for free. Thanks to Irbaumard @ HUKD!

Endless Space Getting Free Steam Weekend & Discount

Amplitude Studios has announced that Endless Space will be free to play on Steam from later today until December 3rd. According to the Google-translated post, it will also be available at half price for the duration.

At this point, I should mention that I splashed out 9/10 in our Endless Space review, paraphrasing Douglas Adams to say "you just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is." This might be a good time to try it out if you're not too busy playing with your new Wii U.

And it's £7.82. GamersGate have shown up even the Steam Thanksgiving sale with what appears to be the cheapest price yet.
