Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns Interview | Drew Cady & Jerry Schroeder on Sound Design

I've stated many times that I think Guild Wars 2 is a visually pleasing game thanks to its distinctive art style, but I have just as many good things to say about the audio side of things. I'm not just referring to the soundtrack, either, as the sound design is often the unsung hero for ArenaNet's MMORPG. From the sword swing of a Warrior, to the explosive fireball of an Elementalist, to the sounds of a character running over sand - each action has had a sound effect forged for it.

ArenaNet have shown us how these sounds are created in the past - such as when the sound design team played with fire - but today they have released a new video in collaboration with Sennheiser that focuses on the audio effects and ambiance for the Heart of Thorns expansion. Ahead of its release, I was invited to chat with two of ArenaNet's sound designers, Drew Cady and Jerry Schroeder, to learn more about the sound design throughout the Maguuma jungle. While this one is obviously geared at Guild Wars 2 fans, I'd recommend checking it out if you want to learn how sound designers come up with some (frankly ingenious) methods to create audio effects for your favourite games. You can hear the interview in its entirety after the jump!

Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns - Raids Preview with Crystal Reid

After three weeks of players stomping around the Maguuma Jungle, later today a brand new challenge arrives in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns. The first wing of the much anticipated Raid content will become available for brave groups of 10-players to tackle, offering a whole new difficulty level compared to the content that has come before.

I know this because last week I was taken on a virtual tour to meet Gorseval, the first boss of three that await players in the Spirit Vale. With a group of ArenaNet employees at my side, and lead designer Crystal Reid offering me pearls of wisdom and answering my questions over voice comms, I dived in to see if the team had successfully created finely tuned epic encounters that worked with the gameplay Guild Wars 2 is known for. While I hate to paraphrase something from 'that other MMO' in a Guild Wars 2 article, there’s no other way to put it...

I was not prepared.

Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns Review | My Jungle Love

If I had to describe Heart of Thorns in one word, it would be ‘humongous.’

Even after two weeks in the Maguuma Jungle I still haven’t traversed all of the new multi-layered zones, which in turn means I haven’t unlocked all of the masteries or taken part in all of the different events. Of course, all the content in the world means nothing if the game is no longer fun, but that is certainly not the case – Guild Wars 2 continues to be an enjoyable MMO experience, and Heart of Thorns adds to that with its own, non-traditional progression.

Most MMO title launches, and even expansions, tend to come with launch day issues. Less intensive titles like Destiny have fallen prey to this apparent curse, and even World of Warcraft’s servers couldn’t handle the sudden influx of players back when Warlords of Draenor launched last year. It’s something that most of us on the MMO scene have come to accept as the norm, and so we bunker up around launch time for the inevitable bumpy ride.

But it didn’t happen with Heart of Thorns. No, everything went smoothly.

Play Guild Wars 2? Get 2000 gems for just £12.99

Getting ready for the Heart of Thorns expansion and want some gems in your wallet? Or maybe you're eyeing up one of the many microtransaction costume pieces available in the Black Lion store? In which case you'll want to check out this cracking deal, which beats the next best offer by around £7, and definitely beats the in-game prices. It's not just costume pieces you can get, of course - you can expand your inventory, customise your character's look or name, get a musical instrument (no, really), or buy temporary boosters if you're in a hurry to get to level 80 by next week. Why I've returned to Guild Wars 2 - and why you should give it a chance

Towards the end of 2014 I found myself playing Guild Wars 2 again. The break I had taken from Tyria was fairly substantial thanks other MMOs appearing on the scene, but I finally had to time to give it another go and get my engineer Harry McGarnagle back into action. While I had dipped in and out throughout the year I hadn’t really appreciated the amount of content that had been added during that time. The new zones on the edges of the Maguuma Jungle, along with the second season of the Living Story, has ensured the player base have had plenty to do. See, that is exactly why I loved Guild Wars 2 so much in the first place – there is always something to do, and people to share the experience with.

But the thing that truly got me excited to play again? Beating the revamped Tequatl encounter for the first time.

For those that don't know, Tequatl the Sunless is one of the open-world bosses found throughout the gigantic world of Tyria. The original encounter against that bloody huge dragon wasn't exactly the hardest thing ever, so ArenaNet went about revamping the experience, and then some. That improved fight has been in-game for a while now, but having only witnessed it once before on a practically empty overflow server all I had seen was a bloodbath. Undead plagued the battleground, what few players were there had been defeated, and a massive bone shield was protecting the dragon that towered above it. My first true attempt at defeating him wasn’t a success either. Too many of us didn’t know what to do, especially in regards to the turrets and protecting the megalazer, and the end result was Tequatl wiping out everything with wave of mass destruction. It was both terrifying and amazing in equal measure.

Guild Wars 2 | Mike Zadorojny Q&A on Escape from Lion’s Arch

Well into its second year of life now, Guild Wars 2 continues to keep the virtual populace of Tyria busy thanks to its Living Story. Through the initiative, players have fought off underground invaders, taken part in an election, and dealt with some sky pirates, but a lot of events have been building up to the latest update which goes live today. In the newest instalment of the Living Story, supervillan Scarlet Briar takes his forces and attacks one of the most iconic locations in the Guild Wars series – Lion’s Arch – and developers at ArenaNet are saying that the events of this invasion are going to have a lasting effect on Tyria.

In anticipation of the update we invited member of the community to submit some questions to Mike Zadorojny, the design lead on Guild Wars 2, so we’ve got his responses, along with a quick overview of Escape from Lion’s Arch, after the jump.

Guild Wars 2: Tequatl Gets Serious In Today's Update

Tequatl The Sunless has been getting increasingly annoyed by Guild Wars 2 players kicking his sorry undead posterior and stealing his stuff every day, so has decided to up the ante. Today's update, Tequatl Rising, powers him up with an arsenal of new abilities and a retooled event that will require an "army of players" to beat.

Challenge accepted. Tequatl Rising also adds a new LFG tool and some more World vs World tweaks to ArenaNet's MMO, which we've corralled after the break along with a trailer.
