Arma 2 £8.98 @ Game.co.uk and Gameplay.co.uk [PC Game]

When it comes to games like Armed Assault and Operation Flashpoint, they’re really not for everyone. The game play of these titles has to be some of the most horrendously frustrating and unforgiving I’ve ever encountered, and certainly a far cry from your Modern Warfare 2’s and – sadly – your Operation Flashpoint 2’s. However, that said, when you stuck with a game like Operation Flashpoint and actually manage to pull off some impossible mission by the skin of your teeth, few games are as rewarding.

So, if you think you can handle it, and feel like taking on a merciless, practically impossible tactical FPS with uncomfortable levels of realism, Armed Assault 2 is going for just £8.98 at Game.co.uk and Gameplay.co.uk. This is a superb price – and the cheapest deal currently going for a truly remarkable FPS title.

Unfortunately however, fans of the classic Operation Flashpoint series will find AA2 (and indeed the first edition) a tad disappointing. In my opinion they are still vastly superior to OFP 2 – which basically dumbed down and repackaged the whole Flashpoint thing for the console market – but they’re still, in many ways, somehow flawed. When it comes to graphics they’re absolutely top notch. The environments are vast, highly detailed and stunning – actually, to be quite honesty, AA is probably one of the best looking games I’ve ever played.

The real let down comes with the sheer number of bugs it contains. Weapons become invisible, checkpoints often fail to instigate the right triggers, and your men often get stuck on the scenery, run each over, shot each other and so on. On top of this, enemy accuracy is unrealistically (and unfairly) high, whilst you’d be lucky to hit a barn door at three feet with your own weapon. Cold War Crisis and Resistance somehow managed to get the balance just right, but by making AA so unfairly and stupidly hard, the developers have actually undermined rather than heightened the sense of realism. This is a real shame, but even so, AA has moments of pure genius which, overall, make this a game which any fan of combat simulations  has to explore.

Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 unveiled

From Batman: Arkham Asylum to Armed Assault 2 News Roundup 14th December

Batman: Arkham Asylum was one of the biggest titles of 2009. It attained all round critical acclaim, smashed Guinness World Records and is easily one of the finest superhero games ever made. Now Warner Brothers have announced they are wasting no time in getting to work on the sequel. WBIE president Martin Tremblay stated, ‘We are thrilled to build a global game franchise from Batman: Arkham Asylum, which is receiving an incredible response from gamers and fans of Batman around the world.”

Although there is no word yet on platforms or a release date, Warner has released a short teaser trailer depicting the joker being tended to by Harley Quinn.  Despite the fact some fans are skeptical (especially since Warner has taken over from Squre Enix/Eidos whose partnership proved to be a real winner), let’s hope this sequel isn’t just an attempt to cash-in and actually lives up to its epic predecessor. There is no doubt 2010 is going to be a great year for videogames with the likes of Halo: Reach, God of War, Bioshock 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction all due for release. However, for fans of Gran Turismo, it looks the wait continues for the fifth edition of the franchise which, at one point, was going to be released in 2009. Now, with the Gran Turismo 5 coming out in Japan sometime in March 2010, it’s possible that the racing title might hit the UK shelves sometime in Summer 2010. [GTForums]

Steam Weekend Deal: Arma II £12.49 @ STEAM [PC games]

Steam Weekend Deal: Arma II £12.49 @ STEAM [PC games]

Having evolved from the legendary Operation Flashpoint series, Armed Assault 2 is a tactical first person shooter which prides itself on high levels of realism. Despite a few flaws regarding a buggy single player campaign, AA2 provides a vast, brilliantly detailed open world environment in which every vehicle is interactive and battles which are both unpredictable and chaotic. The end result is a game which takes on the feel of both a realistic first person shooter and an RTS.

So if you’re looking for something a bit more than your usual run of the mill FPS title, Armed Assault 2 is currently going for half price as part of this weekend’s Steam deal. It will set you back £12.49 which is the cheapest deal available although the next best price comes in only a few pounds more at £15.

Those who are familiar with the original Armed Assault will know that, despite many strengths, the game was let down by a few gameplay elements which really had a very negative effect upon the overall experience. Whilst the graphics were absolutely superb with breathtaking detail, particularly when it came to vehicles – with intricately detailed chopper cockpits and great explosions etc – the game’s difficulty was just ridiculous. Enemies hardly ever missed, even from obscured ranges, whilst on the other hand, with supposedly ‘realistic’ firearms, you’d be lucky to hit a barn door at ten feet. The game was also full of bugs, even though to their credit, AA developers managed to rectify many of these with a decent patch.

AA2 manages to balance out the difficulty somewhat, and now, the enemy AI is a bit more realistic in the sense that every grunt you face doesn’t have the marksmanship skills of Vassili Zaitzev. However there are still issues regarding in game triggers which can be incredibly infuriating. Having gone through hell to overcome some semi-suicidal mission objective, there’s nothing more annoying than a waiting by a broken trigger which won’t recognize your success and forces you to restart. So despite so many great points with Armed Assault 2 – even better graphics, highly imaginative missions – the game is still very buggy, and you’ll probably want to get downloading as many patches as possible after you’ve installed.Steam Weekend Deal: Arma II £12.49 @ STEAM [PC games]
