Helldivers Review | I'm From Super Earth And I Say Kill 'Em All!

If you love Starship Troopers, you're going to get a massive kick out of Helldivers.

The goddamn bugs whacked us, so now the 'managed democracy' of Super Earth finds itself beset by ravaging hordes of aliens, twisted cyborgs and hyper-advanced civilizations. Only the brave citizens of the Helldivers have what it takes to turn the tide, fearlessly dropping into the most dangerous missions from orbit and bringing the light of propaganda to the entire galaxy one blackened nuclear crater at a time. Or just charging straight into the grinder.

Verhoeven would be proud, but in gameplay terms, Magicka fans are going to be in their element here. Arrowhead Game Studios are already experts in the field of utterly bonkers cooperative shooting, and Helldivers takes things one step further. You'll drop into battle with three mates and an insane customised loadout, calling in everything from turrets to mechs and tanks from orbit, then desperately try to avoid being killed... or accidentally killing each other.

Helldivers Review | I'm From Super Earth And I Say Kill 'Em All!

Friendly fire has never been so much fun, and it makes Helldivers one of the most entertaining twin-stick shooters in years. Would you like to know more?

Magicka | £1.99 / Free Weekend | Steam | PC

The latest Steam Weekend Deal is here, and this time it’s Magicka’s turn for a reduction. Perhaps the best part is that it will be free to play for all Steam users for the duration, which mean you have the chance to decide if asking price of £1.99 is worth it. Alternatively, you can opt to pay £7.49 for the Magicka Collection and get all 21 DLC items at once, which provides an even bigger saving overall.

As for the game itself, the combination of humour, replayability and mixing of spells is satisfying to watch as the carnage unfolds, and the multiplayer options mean that it’s a great (and cheap) excuse to cause some online chaos with friends (and the current 4-pack deal makes it even cheaper if you want to go down that route.) In short, give it a blast and decide for yourself.

Meet The Cast Of The Showdown Effect In New Trailer

The Showdown Effect, a multiplayer 2.5D shooter from the creators of Magicka, is now two months from release. This new trailer introduces us to some of the larger-than-life action movie characters that populate the roster of reprobates, along with some behind the scenes development and new gameplay footage.

You'll meet Dutch McClone, a time-traveling Austrian searching for his identity; Lance Koboldski, a grizzled cop with only one day until retirement; Hailey Skye, a plucky girl genius who'll stop at nothing to uncover her father's killer; and Shur Foo, a gentleman who seems to believe there's no problem you can't solve by punching it.

The Showdown Effect releases on March 5th for PC - and you can now sign up to the Beta.

Magicka 'The Other Side Of The Coin' DLC Dated & Trailered

Bored of playing as the good guys? Want to get a little payback? Do you, erm, already own Magicka? If the answer to either question is yes, Paradox Interactive has what's yours: a new DLC pack that lets you play as a (wannabe) evil vampire as he schemes to kill Vlad and bring terror to the realm. Entitled The Other Side Of The Coin, this latest expansion will release on June 14th for approximately £3.20. Details and trailer below.

Magicka Collection | £4.49 | GamersGate | PC

GamersGate have individually slashed the prices of Magicka and almost all of its DLC, meaning that you can nab the base game for the default 'deal' price level of £2.40, or grab all nine bits of DLC thrown in for an extra £2.09 - including the Vietnam and Nippon expansions. Note that the collection doesn't include The Stars Are Left, which can be brought seperately for an extra £1.98 (also discounted). Just in case there aren't enough options for you, the four pack has been slashed down to £7.19, making a single copy worth £1.80.

In case you haven't heard of Magicka, it's an anarchic and irreverent magical action game that allows you to combine insane elemental spells into a countless selection of brutal, beamish, brilliant beams, balls and thunderous death rays. It's also probably the only parody game that manages to take the mickey out of standard RPG cliches without perpetrating them itself, and the multiplayer is still an absolute joy.

Magicka Plus | £2.98 | GAME & Gamestation | PC

Magicka has enjoyed several sub-£3 price drops this year, but the GAME group are willing to offer the physical Plus package at this ludicrously low level. Not only will you get the base game and undercut Steam by a few pence, but you'll also get the Vietnam, Survival Kit and Marshlands DLC included and save a few quid.

Magicka: The Stars Are Left DLC Review | Tough Love(Craft)

Platform: PC (reviewed)

Developer: Arrowhead Game Studios

Publisher: Paradox Interactive

H.P. Lovecraft's grand works will stand the test of time as truly exceptional examples of effective horror writing... and geek culture has accepted him with open arms. Cthulhu is a household name as well a plushie. Shub-Niggurath, The Goat With A Thousand Young, appears as a boss in the original Quake. Games are permeated by his insidious, wonderful influence... and while we respect his stories, they're certainly ripe for parody.

Magicka, one of the rare parody games that actually provides an excellent gameplay experience as well as belly laughs, is definitely the game for the job.

I don't think that Magicka really has a 'canon' as such, but for what it's worth, The Stars Are Left takes place a few years after the original campaign. The four heroes are now enjoying their well-deserved retirement (sporting rather fetching detective trenchcoats and magnifying glass staffs, no less) and living the high life... and on cue, Vlad - who is not, I repeat not a vampire - reappears to task them with a new quest. A new evil is stirring in Outsmouth, and it's up to the magi to put down their cocktails and pick up their staffs for some more From there, The Stars Are Left propels players through a hilarious and meaty three-mission campaign complete with new environments, two massive new bosses and a sense of humour that riffs on everything from Lovecraft to Minecraft. Arrowhead know how to make a genuinely funny game - and the humour is derived from both silly jokes and surprisingly thoughtful use of the source material.

Magicka makes you feel like one hell of a powerful wizard as you toss fireballs around, spray ice at your enemies, and stop them in their tracks by delivering a big dose of lightning. Also, there's a nice amount of humour sown throughout the game that brings a light hearted edge to the proceedings. Steam have dropped their price for the game down to £1.99 until the 21st of November, which is an amount that everybody could probably find weighing down their pockets in loose change. Thanks to danblu3 @ HUKD for drawing my attention towards this one.

Magicka: The Stars Are Left DLC Announced

Cthulhu Magicka Wgah'nagl Fhtagn!

Paradox Interactive and Arrowhead Studios have announced that Magicka will soon be receiving its biggest and creepiest content pack to date. The Stars Are Left will pit up the four wizards against a horror-mystery adventure campaign inspired by the popular Cthulhu Mythos; featuring several terrifying new enemies, bosses awakened from the depths of insanity, and several other miscellaneous Miskatonic minions. And there'll also be a MineCraft parody.

The Stars Are Left is scheduled for a "winter" launch, and we have more details and a trailer after the break.

Gamersgate are the latest retailer to jump on the "who can give away Magicka for next to nothing for a limited time" bandwagon... and though they aren't quite as cheap as Impulse Driven's latest deal, they still provide the cheapest price around at present. Magicka is an anarchic and unique experience that isn’t afraid to give gamers exactly what they want: powerful magic and epic pyrotechnics. The magic system challenges its players to combine eight elements to create their own spells; making you feel like a total badass as you shoot force beams of electricity and ice and enormous dirty fireballs. What’s more, Magicka’s sense of humour is spot-on, and it succeeds at being one of the few parody games that doesn’t fall prey to the same genre conventions that it merrily insults at every opportunity.
