Ubisoft: Too Much Content Can Be Dangerous

Assassin’s Creed 3's creative director, Alex Hutchinson, has suggested that games can suffer from being overly long or perhaps trying to pack in too much content, saying that he felt it was important to strip back some of the mechanics for AC3, but that the game is still "pushing the maximum possible scope".

Want more freeform, parkour-tinged period murdering? Well Ezio's back. He's brought along a few irritating new mechanics (ugh...den defence), but by and large this is a solid end to his story arc, even if Byzantium can't really rival Rome as a setting.

Assassin's Creed Revelations 'Lost Archive' DLC Hits Next Week

Microsoft PR warlock Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb has announced that Assassin's Creed: Revelation's latest DLC pack - the innovatively titled Revelations Lost Archive - is headed to Xbox Live on February 28th. We assume that PC and PS3 release dates will be very similar since no exclusivity deal exists.

Lost Archive will expand Revelations with new campaign content for Desmond, leaked via Achievement descriptions, which we hope will set up the premise for Assassin's Creed 3. Or tease us mercilessly at the very least.

AC Revelations Director Exits Ubisosft

Leaves For Marketing Firm

Assassin's Creed: Revelations wasn't quite as successful as Ubisoft had hoped, I imagine, effectively ending their idea of an annualized AC model - I hope. It had some interesting ideas, and switching to Constantinople was yet again an inspired location change, but overall the formula had become generic and tired, and the series is in dire need of a revolution instead of revelations. Geddit? Ahem, well, it appears as if creative director Alexandre Amancio has had enough with overdressing assassins, too, as he's left Ubisoft to join a marketing firm.

"Video games and advertising have many common elements," Amancio told Game Informer, about to take on his new role of chief creative officer at Cossette, a Canadian marketing company. "In addition, like advertising, the video game industry must now take into account and supply a very important social dimension in its development and strategies. The game is no longer just a game, it's a community, relations between players, and the brand." Ubisoft have yet to comment on the matter, although reports of sniffling and the occasional emotional hiccup have been reported from their HQ. [Game Informer]

Assassin's Creed Revelations' Next Map Pack Unveiled

Become A 'Mediterranean Traveler'

Having already released the 'Ancestor Character Pack' last month in December, Ubisoft has now turned their attention towards delivering a new multiplayer map pack for Ezio Auditore Di Firenze's last adventure, with the 'Mediterranean Traveler Map Pack' set for release on January 24th on Xbox LIVE, the Playstation Network and Windows PC. We've a bunch of screenshots to throw at your face.

Discover The Ancestors Character Pack

So, Assassin's Creed: Revelations wasn't quite as spectacular as Brotherhood. While Ubisoft's annualized model for AC might be in their best interests financially, the series is beginning to groan under the weight of our expectations, and I feel it's about time we leaped forward a generation or two and dived in to a true sequel.

However, Revelations is by no means a bad game. The multiplayer, for starters, is yet another bold and ambitious step forward. It's not without its flaws, but there's nothing quite like it out there. And we've the first batch of DLC to enjoy now, with the Ancestors Character Pack hitting PC, PSN and Xbox LIVE today. It'll cost you £3.19 on PC and PS3, and 320 MS Points on 360. The first map pack, dubbed Mediterranean Traveler, will follow on January 24th. Until then, get an eye-full of the Ancestors pack launch trailer.

UK Games Charts | 5th December 2011

No points for guessing what's still topping the charts: Modern Warfare 3. We really only have ourselves to blame. Assassin's Creed: Revelations falls prey to a renewed surge from FIFA 12 as the football title takes second, with Just Dance 3 moving on up as well. Mario Kart 7 debuts at 8, with the 3DS finally, finally getting the multiplayer title its social audience has been crying out for since day one. Wii-only Zumba Fitness 2 slots in fourteen places below its multiplatform parent.

UK Games Charts | 28 November 2011

Another week, another top spot for Modern Warfare 3. While many have chosen not to buy into this year's annualised blockbuster - and others have since moved on to pastures new - its great value and sheer brand power are still shifting a lot of copies. Ezio's latest adventure is still grappled onto second place despite it possibly being a rehash too far.

Elsewhere, little has changed save the arrival of WWE 2012 and Professor Layton: Spectre's Call.

Which is odd, because some major games have just released. Heartbreakingly, the exceptional platformer Rayman Origins has completely failed to chart in the top 40 (though it only released on Friday, admittedly) and sub-par hack & slasher LOTR: War In The North only limped into the finish at 38th. Maybe... just maybe... releasing in the middle of the retail killing fields wasn't actually a good idea for these smaller titles? Hate to say I told you so.

UK Top ten after the break.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations Review | Revelations, Yes. Revolutions? No.

Platforms: PC | PS3 | Xbox 360 (primary version tested)

Developers: Ubisoft Montreal (with help from five other Ubisoft studios)

Publisher: Ubisoft

Watching the opening credits to Assassin's Creed: Revelations served to scare me just a little. The initial ten minutes is pure Matrix-sequel gibberish and an utterly uninspiring introduction to Ezio's swansong and then, once you hit the credits, you're treated to a reel of studio after studio popping up to reveal just how fragmented the development actually was. For me as a reviewer, it instantly made me look out for bits that didn't quite line up, whether I wanted it to or not. As a huge fan of the series, we gave Brotherhood top marks, it's fair to say that I was pretty worried.

Thankfully that doesn't last very long at all, as you're plunged into Renaissance Constantinople/Istanbul, a city divided into factions - Assassins vs. Templars, Ottomans squaring up to Byzantines, all sprinkled with a dash of royal scheming. Once again Revelations proves that Ezio is a far more interesting protagonist than Desmond, whose own first-person sections almost ruin what serves to be an enjoyable, if fragmented, romp through the gateway to the east.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations Review | Revelations, Yes. Revolutions? No.

Things kick off with Desmond trapped in the Animus having finally gone insane from chasing ancestral memories through his DNA. All of the voices in his head have mushed together and, as a helpful chap known as Subject 16 explains, Desmond must complete his journey through the lives of Altair and Ezio, learning all he can from them so they have nothing more to offer, in order to separate them out from his own consciousness.

No it doesn't make a huge amount of sense, but then this series has never exactly been big on narrative simplicity.

UK Games Charts | 21 November 2011

A lot of new games have released this week and are giving Modern Warfare 3 a run for its money. Activision's blockbuster has marked an 87% decrease in sales compared to the last time we checked in, but has still managed to cling on to the top spot for now. Skyrim, FIFA 12, Battlefield and Just Dance 3 are also still enjoying strong Christmas sales and jostling around the lower positions.

Elsewhere, however, it's all change please. Assassin's Creed: Revelations has zip-lined and British gunpowdered its way into second place, along with Saints Row: The Third, Halo Anniversary and The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword all securing top ten prestige. A 3DS game is also in the charts (hell, it's about time), thanks to Super Mario 3D Land finally giving us beleaguered early adopters what we want.

As always, we've got the all-important rankings below.

Is Assassin's Creed 3 Set In Egypt?

WARNING! Spoilers For AC: Revelations Inside!

We've long wondered where Ubisoft might take the next full-blown Assassin's Creed adventure. While we've enjoyed seeing out Ezio's last days in last year's Brotherhood and this month's Revelations, we here at Dealspwn feel we've spent enough time in one era and it would be in the franchise's benefit to truly move the narrative forward. But have Ubisoft dropped a none too subtle hint in their latest offering?

Nolan North: Ubisoft Follow Naughty Dog's Example For Mo-Cap With Assassin's Creed

Nolan North recently expressed huge admiration for the way Naughty Dog have conducted their motion capture and approach to voice acting, having actors record their lines on a sound stage whilst acting out scenes for full mo-cap. It's an approach which North suggests Ubisoft might be wise to adopt for Assassin's Creed.

New To Assassin's Creed? Ubisoft Detail The Story So Far

It's no secret. The tale at the heart of the Assassin's Creed series is about as ridiculous as they come. But Ubisoft have done a pretty damn good job of condensing the last three games' narratives into a two and a half minute synopsis for those new to the franchise. Hell, even if you're a veteran, you'll probably get a nice little recap kick out of this one - explaining the inexplicable in relatively simple terms. If you find yourself scratching your head at the end of it, though, don't worry; it proves you're sane.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations Launch Trailer Is All Kinds Of Epic

There are too many fundamentally necessary games out this month dammit! Think of the wallets, games publishers. Think of the children!! Anyway, another one lands on shelves next Tuesday, one that will hopefully tie up a few loose ends - certainly for Ezio - and answer a few questions. Assassin's Creed: Revelations sends the master assassin to war-torn Constantinople and we're itching to get our hands on it.

Remember, we're running a big fat competition tomorrow, where we'll be giving away 18 copies of the game. So you'd best start getting excited too.

New Assassin's Creed Revelations Video Details Den Defense

Third Ottoman Assassins Episode Flies In

Earlier this month, Ubisoft unveiled the new Assassin's Creed Revelations episodic bite-sized series, Secrets of the Ottoman Assassins, detailing all the key features ahead of the fourth AC game's release. We've been filled in on the all new Hook Blade, which grants Ezio increased traversal abilities and combat options; the new bomb crafting features, where the death-dealing Italian can fashion elaborate explosive devices. And now the latest episode, Den Defence, shows off the all new tower defense-style activities Ezio can enjoy.

Clues Us In On Desmond's Plight

Assassin's Creed Revelations is just a month away now, with Ubisoft closing the proverbial door on Ezio and Desmond once and for all in a climactic finish spanning decades worth of conflict. It's actually quite sad to think we're nearing the end of Ezio's journey. The smooth-talking assassin is one of the finest protagonists ever crafted by Ubisoft, and we've shaped his life from a cocksure teen to a battle-hardened leader of men, tracing every step and severed artery along the way. If you're eager to find out clues about Ezio's last adventure ahead of schedule, Revelations' list of Achievements have once again been outed by Xbox360Achievements. Beware, it's spoiler-ridden and gives us a couple of big clues as to what direction the story takes, especially for Desmond.

Assassin's Creed's Annual Cycle "Ideal" For Ubisoft

Allows For A More "Focused" And "Efficient" Production

While I'd love for Ubisoft to do a full-blown, laughably anachronistic Assassin's Creed 3, you can't fault their choice to annualize the series, especially when Brotherhood is the strongest title of the bunch with Revelations looking set to follow suit. Ubisoft appear pretty comfortable with the schedule, too, dubbing the annual cycle "ideal", as it promotes a more "focused" and "efficient" production, avoiding the pitfalls of three year, 180 staff-strong endeavors.

Secrets of the Ottoman Assassins Revealed

Between Skyrim, Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed Revelations, I'm not quite sure how I'm going to cope in November, let alone eat! It's perhaps the most important month of the gaming year, with the big publishers saving their even bigger hitters for this precious date. Ubisoft have quite a fight on their hands convincing gamers to spare time and money away from MW3 and Skyrim to pick up Revelations, but judging by these two videos from the Secrets of the Ottoman Assassins series, I wouldn't count out Ezio in November just yet.
