Infinity Ward Announce Modern Warfare Double XP Long Weekend

Infinity Ward have announced that there's double XP up for grabs across all Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 playlists for a week from May 23rd (that's today!) through to May 29th.

The second Collection Pack for MW3 launched on Xbox LIVE this week, and includes three new Survival maps, two new Spec Ops missions, and two new Face-Off maps. You can nab it here for 1200 MSP. The double XP goodness should be available across all platforms, though.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Defiance | £19.95 | The Hut | DS

With a unique storyline, 14 campaign missions and 6-player online, n-Space's latest COD title for Nintendo's extraordinarily popular handheld is pretty well-packed. It pushes the hardware to its limits and offers a fresh perspective on the main story. The Hut have the game for £19.95, just for today, which is pretty good considering Coolshop's flagging stock, and the £2 saving on the rest of the competition. Nice one, Syzable!i

UK Games Charts | 28th January 2012

Not many surprises to be found at the top of the table this week, with FIFA 12 still sitting pretty in pole position. The end of January has seen a little surge from Modern Warfare 3, though, leapfrogging Skyrim to go second. Only one new release this week in the top ten, with Resident Evil: Revelations - bringing the survival horror franchise to the 3DS - made its debut at six. Zumba Fitness is still managing to outsell its sequel, but sadly office faovurite Rayman Origins has just dropped outside the top tier.

Modern Warfare 3 Title Update 8 Deploys On Xbox Live

Youtube Upload Buffed, Akimbo Nerfed

Infinity Ward has announced that Modern Warfare 3's eighth title update is now available on Xbox Live and is in certification for PS3. The patch contains a major improvement to Youtube upload speed, fixes for host disadvantage and lag along with a whole heap of nerfs. We've got the full details after the break, complete with other fixes being considered for the next update (including further improvements to the spawn system).

IW's Robert Bowling (aka fourzerotwo) states that the update will "be out shortly on all platforms soon." In that vein, hopefully it will quickly make its way to PS3 rapidly, fast.

Modern Warfare 3 Deploys Map Pack Screenshots

Liberation & Piazza The First Of Many

Last week, Activision announced that premium subscribers to its Call of Duty Elite service would be rewarded with no less than twenty maps over the next nine months. Their mantra? To provide "more new content, more often, and with more variety than ever". Snappy. Well, we've nine new screenshots from the first two maps set to be released, Liberation and Piazza, which appear to offer a distinctly European backdrop to all the bullet-riddled carnage set to unfold.

Skyrim's The Limit

While Bethesda's gargantuan RPG isn't quite the David to Activision's Goliath - both are multi million dollar titles, of course - you can't help but smile to see Skyrim top the charts the week before Christmas. We'd all thought Modern Warfare 3 was guaranteed the top spot, but despite an 8% drop in sales, Skyrim held fast. In fact, MW3 isn't even peering up at Alduin and co from second place, as Just Dance 3 has leapfrogged it from third to second. FIFA 12 holds on to fourth for the second week running, while Saints Row: The Third enjoyed a suitable three place jump to claim fifth.

Modern Warfare 3 To Receive New Game Modes

Details Set For Tomorrow

I'm not the biggest fan of Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer. But a lot of you do, so you'll be pleased to hear that Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games will soon be introducing new game modes into matchmaking. "Ready for new game modes for Modern Warfare 3?" community chief, Rob Bowling, tweeted to his followers. "I've got some surprises for you for the weekend. I'll confirm full details tomorrow!"

So, we'll have to wait until tomorrow for the true announcement, but until then let's don our speculation caps and get thinking! It could be an all new game mode, or they might simply be resurrecting a past mode from previous CoD games that was forgotten in all the hubbub of their annualized cycle. We'll have more for you on this tomorrow. [Twitter]

Modern Warfare 3 Matchmaking Problems On LIVE?

Unsupported LIVE Regions Afflicted

If you're looking to play Modern Warfare 3 in countries where Xbox LIVE's extensive reach doesn't... well, reach, then you might find the Activision shooter's matchmaking won't work. Xbox Support took to Twitter to alert fans in unsupported regions that Modern Warfare 3 won't be accessible online. "COD: MW3 multiplayer online is only accessible if you're in an eligible Xbox Live region," they told followers, with Croatia one of the countries affected.

Don't surrender all hope just yet, though; as Infinity Ward's community chief, Rob Bowling, told followers the two MW3 teams are "actively discussing" the issue and "talking to users affected". However, he admits to no "ETA at this point", with the likes of Malaysia, Norway, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus and Finland reporting such issues. We'll have more for you on this as it develops. UK Games Charts | 5th December 2011

No points for guessing what's still topping the charts: Modern Warfare 3. We really only have ourselves to blame. Assassin's Creed: Revelations falls prey to a renewed surge from FIFA 12 as the football title takes second, with Just Dance 3 moving on up as well. Mario Kart 7 debuts at 8, with the 3DS finally, finally getting the multiplayer title its social audience has been crying out for since day one. Wii-only Zumba Fitness 2 slots in fourteen places below its multiplatform parent.

Activision: Games Unfairly Treated In Comparison To Film

"Video Games Are Fictitious Popular Culture"

Another year, another Call of Duty, and yet another tabloid headline condemning our poor old videogame industry. You can't expect to be the biggest entertainment launch in history and not attract some controversy, of course, but criticism from the press and certain politicians targeted at Activision's Modern Warfare 3 felt a little... repeated? And according to Acti's Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, treatment of our burgeoning industry is very unfair in comparison to other violent mediums such as film.

Tom Watson Defends BBFC Ratings And Modern Warfare 3

Tom Watson probably deserves a trophy of some kind, or at least a cape. When he isn't bust busting the chops of Murdoch & Son, it would appear he finds time to champion video games, this time stepping up to defend Modern Warfare 3 against a broad complaint from the infamous Keith Vaz.

Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer | Failing To Live Up To The Hype

I'll admit it; I'm a Call of Duty multiplayer addict. I racked up over ten days worth of playtime on the first Modern Warfare; almost twelve on its sequel; and the number continues to grow on Black Ops. I've wasted spent a considerable amount of my life rattling clips into virtual strangers and reaping the rewards. I've laughed, I've often thought of crying, and I've loved it all the way. But that said, I still hate the damn game, and Activision's refusal to budge from its annualized release schedule, therefore stifling the series of any meaningful change or creativity.

But Modern Warfare 3 was supposed to be different. With Sledgehammer Games joining a now reformed Infinity Ward and boasting of all manner of changes set to hit the third Modern Warfare game, I was all smiles. Finally, the game I so loved was about to get so much better. They spoke of balance, of a return to the gun-on-gun system of old. Farewell killstreaks, long live pointstreaks and all that.

But has Modern Warfare 3 lived up to the hype of its creators? Or have we all been duped, once more, into contributing to the industry's most creatively bankrupt and yet financially successful title ever?

Finite Rewards

Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer | Failing To Live Up To The Hype

If you're an avid follower of Call of Duty, you'll no doubt be aware that Infinity Ward, the original developers in charge of the Modern Warfare line, suffered something of a personal crisis this past year. Co-founders Jason West and Vince Zampella's very public fallout with publisher Activision led to a massive exodus, wrenching a large portion of their workforce away from Modern Warfare 3's development, resulting in upstart studio Sledgehammer Games coming in to share the load.

Call Of Duty Brand Can't Compete With Star Wars, Harry Potter

Despite Biggest Entertainment Opening Ever

Despite generating over 750 million dollars in just five days on release, shifting 6.5 million copies in the US and UK alone, the Call of Duty brand still can't hope to compete with the likes of Star Wars and Harry Potter. That's according to Stephen Cheliotis, chief executive of The Center for Brand Analysis, who believes the videogame market is over-saturated with military shooters, resulting in consumer confusion thus diluting brand recognition.

BONUS COMPETITION: Win Modern Warfare 3 - Five Copies Up For Grabs

THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED!

You know how we said on Tuesday that if we got to 5,000 Twitter followers, we'd sort out a little something for you all? Well here it is. We've teamed up with the guys at Simply Tap - a new app that offers an 'instant mobile checkout system' for buying in seconds on the go - to give away five more copies of this year's biggest release: Modern Warfare 3.

Jon's already given the game a 9 for being utterly stuffed to bursting point with content and delivering another rollercoaster ride of excellently balanced FPS action and you can read our Modern Warfare 3 review here.

After the huge success of our #winMW3 Twitter Party, we thought it only fair to say a little thank you. But this time we're going for simplicity. It's even easier to enter this time around. To take part in #WinMW3Returns, all you need to do is pop a comment in the box below completing the following sentence...

'If I was a video game character, I'd be...'

NB. Don't be alarmed if your comments get put in the mod queue, we'll be checking it periodically. Just the robot gatekeeper being cautious.

And that's it. Do make sure that you use a valid email address - we can't contact you if you don't. Winners will be chosen at random as they have been throughout the Twitter parties. Do take note of a few points below:

  • One entry per household
  • UK entrants only
  • Ends at noon on Wednesday 23rd November 2011
  • Admin's decision is final

A thank you to Simply Tap again for sponsoring this one, and thank you to everyone who has taken part in November Madness so far. This one's for you. Good luck!

Modern Warfare 3 Harboring Old COD Maps?

Prepare For The Imminent Map Pack Announcement

Has Activision smuggled old Call of Duty maps in to Modern Warfare 3? It would appear so, with the site MP1ST diving in to the record-breaking shooter's code to discover old Modern Warfare 1 and 2 maps hiding away. Activision has made an absolute killing on Call of Duty map packs - and we can only blame ourselves for paying those extortionate prices - and it would appear a retro themed chunk of content is in the pipeline for MW3.

Surprise, Surprise. Modern Warfare 3 Smashes Day One Sales Records

Well it was always going to happen, really, wasn't it. According to Charttrack, over 6.5 million people snapped up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in the first 24 hours, in the US and UK alone, raking in over $400 million in sales. This means that it smashed the record previously held by Black Ops of 5.6 million copies ($360 million), which itself took the reins from Modern Warfare 2 with 4.7 million copies sold ($310 million).
