Get Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Wii U for just £21.95

While we have seen this for slightly cheaper in the past, this is the lowest price at the time of writing by around a fiver. While it was ultimately a little short, what was there was a delightful cross between Fez and Screwball Scramble. In short, it's yet another title you really should have for your Wii U. The Best Wii U & 3DS Games Of 2015 So Far

We're now halfway through 2015 and it's time to take stock of the year so far. No matter what systems you own and genres you're into, we've already had plenty of great games to get stuck into between January and June.

Yesterday we covered the best PS4 games of 2015. Today we're moving onto Nintendo, both in terms of the Wii U and 3DS, and looking back at six months of quality over quantity. We'll link to our reviews and the cheapest prices around when possible too.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

The Best Wii U & 3DS Games Of 2015 So Far

Let's start with the big one. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is probably the best game in the series and nothing less than an essential killer app.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is utterly magnificent. Newfound vertical freedom, extraordinary new monsters and native 3DS multiplayer makes for the best game in the series to date, coupled with a much more compelling storyline and some killer new features. - 10/10 review

Oh, and let's not forget the boatloads of awesome and completely free DLC delivered every month, from new quests to weapons and fan-favourite costumes!

Still got Club Nintendo stars to spend? Check out this new Captain Toad lamp

Us Europeans can still redeem Club Nintendo stars until the service closes later this year. Nintendo are pleasingly still supporting the service with new merchandise, as evidenced today by a brand new figurine celebrating Captain Toad: Treasure tracker. It's a hefty 6000 stars, but looks the business.

"Halfway between Fez and the best Screwball Scramble set ever created, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a quietly brilliant puzzler," I wrote in our review. "It could stand to be longer and slightly more challenging, but Nintendo have turned a simple premise into something truly lovely."

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker only £20

Halfway between Fez and the best Screwball Scramble set ever created, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a quietly brilliant puzzler. It could stand to be longer and slightly more challenging, but Nintendo have turned a simple premise into something truly lovely.

In an age when so many games are releasing incomplete or unacceptably compromised, it's a delight to play something perfectly formed and designed to be enjoyed, not consumed. I'd just like more of it. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Review | The Industry Could Learn From This Humble Hero (8/10)

Captain Toad ended up releasing a little early over here, and proved to be one of the best surprises of the year. A marvellous puzzle game, stuffed with charm, it's a little short, but still well worth a look. And it's not as though the Wii U is short on quality games at this point in time.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Review | The Industry Could Learn From This Humble Hero

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is just as adorable, enthusiastic and bumbling as its protagonist. Perhaps its publisher too. At the very end of a year that delivered Mario Kart, Bayonetta and Smash Bros, we find ourselves playing a charming low-key puzzle game that was so low-key it wasn't even supposed to release this year in Europe. Except a few stores just decided to sell it anyway and Ninty went with the flow. Classic Nintendo.

No, really: it's classic Nintendo. Despite the hilarious launch and heavyweight competition, Captain Toad manages to showcase Nintendo at their finest: turning a simple concept into a truly delightful game with great visuals, engaging gameplay and real personality. What started life as Super Mario 3D World bonus levels is now one of the left-field success stories of this Christmas.

In fact, the rest of the games industry could learn a thing or two from this humble hero.

Nintendo Direct Highlights 05/11 - Majora's Mask 3D, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Captain Toad and more

Last night's Nintendo Direct was a big one, dishing out exciting announcements for 3DS and Wii U. You can watch the whole thing in its entirety here, but we've cherry-picked a few highlights if you don't have time to watch the whole thing.

Majora's Mask 3D

The big news of the night, Majora's Mask 3D will release on 3DS in the coming spring, and there's a rather natty little collector's edition that'll include the game, a pin badge of Majora's Mask itself, a rather shiny steelbook, and a double-sided poster.

Nintendo: Smashing it in Convention Season - Gamescom Showcase Impressions

Nintendo don't often make much of Gamescom. In the past, they've actually been fairly rubbish at noticing Europe is even here to be honest, in spite of Iwata highlighting the issue several times over the past few years.

But they turned up to this year's show with a host of playable games to demo to the public, and behind closed doors they didn't bother with flashy presentations or snooze-inducing, heavily-scripted developer walkthroughs where you watch someone else play the game, instead they just let people play and let the games speak for themselves.

Letting the games speak for themselves could well be Nintendo's motto. They've never been the best when it comes to corporate communication or getting the word out (the mind-bending originality of the Wii, and that console's aggressive Ant-and-Dec-fronted marketing aside) but their games shine when placed in the perfect environment. It's a shame in some ways that it's only after you've picked up a Wii U and played some of the exceptional titles on offer that the console's essential nature reveals itself.

Nintendo: Smashing it in Convention Season - Gamescom Showcase Impressions

Thankfully, over 300,000 people had the chance to do just that at this year's show.

Jon and I have both gone hands-on with a number of Nintendo's upcoming titles now, so we thought we'd have a little chat about some of the highlights for the Japanese company from this year's show.

PREVIEW | Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is the glorious lovechild of Mario and Fez

PREVIEW | Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is the glorious lovechild of Mario and Fez

Super Mario 3D World's "Captain Toad" stages were absolutely brilliant. They were wonderful puzzle-platforming vignettes that varied the pace a little and gave players something fresh and new to do. Now everyone's favourite, useless little mushroom fellow has his own marquee game, and it's shaping up to be something truly delightful.

Much of the appeal comes from the fact that Toad is fundamentally useless. His only real ability is to plant a smile on your face -- he can't jump or attack or do much for that matter -- and that makes for a game that looks like it might be Super Mario 3D World replica with a new avatar, much like Nintendo did with New Super Mario Bros U and Luigi, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Captain Toad is no Goomba-stomping moustachioed maverick. He's a toddling mushroom with a benevolent god rocking a GamePad and a camera.

That's us. The players.

PREVIEW | Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is the glorious lovechild of Mario and Fez

Our job is to steer Toad through a number of increasingly complex levels that can be spun around, their perspectives played with, to ferret out secret gems and hidden coins, and eventually guide Toad to the star at the end of each stage. It's a mechanism that evokes memories of games such as Echochrome (though Nintendo eschew Escherian temptations) and Fez, where the systems of stages are fixed, and the player progresses through manipulation of the camera angle and the stage itself as a whole.
