2K franchises get the bundle treatment over at Gamersgate
The big highlight from today's offerings on Gamersgate comes in the form of several bundles for some of 2K's biggest franchises. First up is a repeat of the Civilization V bundle from earlier this week, while second on the list is the BioShock Triple Pack containing all three main entries in the series. The third bundle brings XCOM: Enemy Unknown and its Enemy Within expansion together, and the fourth provides the GOTY Editions of Borderlands 1 & 2.

Admittedly, some bundles are more of a bargain than others, and there's a chance for better savings in the coming Christmas sales, but these are still attractive prices if you've yet to play any of these games.

Civilization V: The Complete Edition for £11.90 is a time-stealing bargain

Oh, how I've waited to use that banner again. Glorious. Anyway, as you may have already guessed, Gamersgate have dropped the price on the Complete Edition of Civilization V just below £12. It beats the next best price by around £5, and is certainly more cost effective than buying all the contents individually.

If you already own Civ V and are looking to just get the expansions, you're in luck - Gamersgate have also dropped the price on Gods & Kings to £4.99 and Brave New World to £6.78. In other words, considering how easy it is to be consumed by the "one more turn" mantra, this could end up being a dangerous deal.

Civilization V: Brave New World Launch Trailer

The new global congress allows players to impose game-changing rules on the world, while Shaka is back to utterly ruin everyone on his starting landmass within a handful of turns.

We've got a suitably epic launch trailer below [which is a fortnight early, as mrflump reminds us in the comments], with more details available in our Civilization V: Brave New World hands-on preview and interview with producer Dennis Shirk.

Firaxis: Fans Prefer "Big Fat Expansions" To Piecemeal DLC

According to Firaxis producer Dennis Shirk, Civilization players are more interested in revolutionary new gameplay systems rather than bitty little extras, leading to them publishing proper expansion packs rather than regular DLC.

Civilization V: Brave New World Interview | Tourism, Tomb Raiding & The Future Of Civ

Having sampled Civilization V's latest expansion pack in our Brave New World hands-on preview, we were keen to explore some of the deeper and persistent gameplay systems that Firaxis' latest offering brings to the experience. To this end, we sat down with producer Dennis Shirk to discuss the totally revamped Culture Victory, archaeology, tourism, new Civs and the future of the Civilization franchise.

Jonathan Lester (Dealspwn): Thanks for talking to us, Dennis. In an age where "dumbing down" and "shooter fatigue" are fast becoming buzzwords, why do you think that Civilization is so enduring?

Dennis Shirk (Firaxis): That's a tough one. I think it has to do with Sid [Meier]'s original design, you know, as Mel Brooks would say: "it's good to be the king." Letting players have all the decision-making throughout the game - they make all of the decisions in terms of what happens to their people and their civilizations, from the stone age to the space age - it empowers the player. You don't just play through and then the story's done, you go back and play a different story that unfolds in a completely different way.

You can do it over and over again. There's just limitless amounts of options for players in Civ V, or any Civilization. I think that's the genius of his foundation: there's a limitless amounts of possibilities in terms of what you can do.

Civilization V: Brave New World Interview | Tourism, Tomb Raiding & The Future Of Civ

Dealspwn: Let's get down to business: Brave New World. Your latest DLC pack totally revamps the culture system. Could you tell us about that?

Dennis Shirk: Sure! We basically changed the way the Culture Victory works. Before, you had a really exciting beginning of the game, you were building your wonders etc. But you got to a point in the middle of the game where you're just hitting next turn, you're just trying to get the broadcast towers that's going to make your culture blast. But you're just hitting next turn and trying to fill up your five policy trees, and it just wasn't as interesting or compelling as the other victories in the game.

Firaxis: Brave New World DLC To 'Finish Off The Civilization V Experience'

Civilization V is set to receive another massive expansion pack - Brave New World - on July 12th. Firaxis has approached development with the intention of rounding off the "quintessential Civilization V experience," and that development on next Civilization title will only start when a gameplay designer comes up with "something cool."

Civilization V: Brave New World Preview | Culture Vulture

Platform: PC

Developer: Firaxis

Publisher: 2K Games

Considering that Brave New World is designed to be the final expansion for Civilization V, it's only fitting that it focuses on the endgame. While Gods & Kings did a great job of freshening up the mid-game, Firaxis' latest content drop is all about sweetening the pot for more culturally sensitive players or economy-focused traders, granting us a host of new features and systems to dominate the world through tourism, money or diplomacy. Artists slave away on immortal masterpieces, archaeologists scamper around to secure priceless artefacts, and powerful game-changing rules can be voted on in the new World Congress; conferring lasting boons or devastating embargoes.

If this is all sounding a little too refined and cultured for your tastes, you'll also be pleased to know that Shaka Of The Zulus is finally making a comeback, meaning that the more warlike amongst us will be able to crush their rivals before they've even researched gunpowder. Indeed, the only evidence they ever existed will be the occasional arrowhead dug up by modern day tomb raiders.

Civilization V: Brave New World Preview | Culture Vulture

I recently sat down with Brave New World for a couple of hours, and suffice to say that Civilization players are probably going to get dragged back in for yet another long haul.

Sid Meier's Civilization V | 75% Off & Free To Play Weekend | Steam | PC

Yesterday’s deal from Gamersgate is still on-going, but now Steam have decided to join the party by price matching them for the weekend. Additionally, they are allowing all Steam users to download and play the game full game for free until the sale ends on Monday, giving anyone who wishes a chance to try before they buy.

Civ V ended up being something of a polarising title in the series thanks to its drastic change in some respects, and many were turned off by the lack of animations in multiplayer. Fixes are incoming though in time for the next expansion (due out in June) and, in true Civ style, it should have you saying “One More Turn” to yourself at 3AM. Thanks to TehDomino & Bunford @ HUKD!

One of the more accessible entries in the series, there's still just as much strategic depth as there ever was, it's incredibly pretty, and you'll come back time and time again to get one over on Genghis Khan. Steam Autumn Sale: Civilization V, Limbo, RAGE | PC Games

Another day, another new bunch of deals for Steam users to get their hands on. Here are our three picks of the current cycle, which will expire at 6pm today.

Sid Meier’s Civilization V (£6.79): The latest instalment in the turn-based strategy series had many changes from the usual formula, including a hexagonal game board and non-stacking units, but it all worked well (bar the lack of animations in multiplayer.) With a saving of  around £7, it’s definitely worth a look.

Limbo (£1.79): The stylised platformer had the gaming world in awe last year, and at this price it is almost rude not to give it a go if you haven’t already. Minimal in its presentation, and thought provoking in its content, Matt gave it a 10 in his review. At a ridiculous sub-£2 price, you can find out why for yourself.

RAGE (£14.99): It wasn’t the grand return of the id Software reign that some were hoping, but it’s a beautifully brutal game with shooting mechanics that are incredibly satisfying. It’s just a same everything beyond that was a little lacklustre. Still, at £15 and a saving of a fiver, it might be worth a go.

Civilization-V_dealspwn

Finally, the Game Of The Year Edition for the latest in Sid Meier’s long running strategy series comes down to a price that not only is a saving to you, but also makes more sense to buy than a copy of the original release. Because you get a mighty handful of DLC with this version, as well as it working out only £2 more than the cheapest standard version, it would be mad not to get this instead. Play’s offer also works out around £5 cheaper than other retailers, although there is a catch; you’ll need to wait 4-5 days for dispatch. If you have yet to buy this and want to join the hexagon-based battlefield I would say the wait was worth it, just for the saving on the DLC.
