Aarklash: Legacy Review | Surprisingly Epic Confrontation

Platform: PC

Developer: Cyanide Studio

Publisher: Cyanide Studio

What's more surprising than rebooting a practically extinct tabletop wargame into a painfully average videogame? Commissioning a sequel, that's what.

Not willing to let the dormant Confrontation license go back to sleep after last year's forgettable effort, Cyanide Studios are returning to the Aarklash universe with another isometric strategy/RPG hybrid that clocks in somewhere between Icewind Dale and Dawn Of War II. Once again, you'll lead a small team of combatants through some expansive maps, battling against scores of dark fantasy enemies in real-time combat with an active pause mechanic. Having received little or no fanfare and releasing right on top of GTA V, I fully expected Aarklash: Legacy to be yet another pointless waste of time.

Cyanide saved one surprise for last, however, and it's a big one. Aarklash: Legacy is... good. Rather than rehashing Confrontation, the inconsistent French studio has fixed almost everything that didn't work last time around, and have released one of their best games to date. At a price that, this time, won't break the bank.

Confrontation Review | Aarklash Of The Titans?

Platform: PC

Developer: Cyanide Studio

Publisher: Focus Home Interactive

Warhammer isn't the only tabletop wargame to receive a videogame tie-in. Cyanide Studios, the developer behind Blood Bowl (a Games Workshop spin-off) and the upcoming Game Of Thrones RPG, has acquired the rights to the obscure Confrontation miniature skirmish game, and summarily designed a small-scale fantasy RTS around the experience. Range rulers and dice give way to standard isometric troop movements and pause-able strategic combat, but can Cyanide make Confrontation feel like an epic war rather than a disconnected series of tabletop scuffles?

Our fantasy setting du jour is Aarklash, which in predictable videogame style, presents a world of destroyed beauty riven by the war to end all wars. Rag'narok, specifically. The once peaceful nations have been shattered into factions in order to survive, chief amongst them the beleaguered heroic Griffon army and the nightmarish Scorpion technomancers. Players assume the role of an omniscient commander in control of an elite squad of Griffon troops who sally forth against the Scorpion hordes, hoping to cleanse Aarklash of cyborg clones and reanimated corpses for good. An unintentionally hilarious narrator and dramatic animated cutscenes do a reasonable job of imbuing the experience with a sense of urgency from the get-go, but it's just another cookie-cutter fantasy setting that acts as a vehicle for the combat.

Combat that needs to excel, because Confrontation definitely isn't an RPG. Despite Cyanide's best efforts to deceive us with a breathtakingly disingenuous product description.

Game Of Thrones RPG 'Epic Plot Trailer'

Cyanide Studio's Game Of Thrones RPG is going to have an "epic plot," apparently. Their words, not ours. But you can make up your own mind by watching the newest trailer, which focuses on protagonists, characters and storyline. Guided by vengeance, allegiance, honor and family, the two heroes of the game – Mors, sworn brother of the Night’s Watch, and the red priest Alester – will travel across Westeros and its most famous locales.

Cyanide Studios has confirmed that Confrontation, their RTS/RPG hybrid based on the Confrontation miniature skirmish game, will release via digital distribution and retail outlets on April 5th 2012. To celebrate, they've also sent us a few new screenshots to show off the range of enemies and locations that the brave Griffin army will encounter throughout the campaign.

We were rather pleased with how the project is shaping up in our recent Confrontation hands-on preview, and we'll be sure to bring you the latest as we hear it.

Confrontation Hands-On Preview | Off The Tabletop

Platform: PC

Developer: Cyanide Studio

Tabletop war games can segue nicely into strategic videogames. Relic Entertainment succeeded in sensational style with the Dawn Of War series, converting the beloved Warhammer 40,000 franchise into an epic RTS and a more intimate, character-driven experience. However, Games Workshop aren't the only player on the field, and Cyanide Studio aim to accomplish the same feat with the lesser-known miniature skirmish game Confrontation. From the two levels I was able to play, they certainly have the basics down.

Rag'Narok has come to the world of Aarklash. In fine wargaming tradition, a once peaceful and generic fantasy world has been riven into factions by the war to end all wars, with the beleagured and righteous Griffon army under siege by an league of mechanical horrors. The Scorpion faction has unleashed a horde of nightmarish creatures onto the battlefield, clones and corpses twisted into a steampunk assault force by the Technomancers' dark arts. As an omniscent Griffon commander, players will lead small squads of elite soldiers against the Scorpion threat in pleasingly strategic skirmishes buoyed up by some slick RPG elements.

Game Of Thrones Trailer Gives Us Combat Sneak Peek

Cyanide Studio has released a trailer for their upcoming Game Of Thrones RPG, which grants us a 'first look' at the game's combat system. As well as brutal violence (to be expected considering the subject matter), we'll need to analyse enemies for potential weaknesses and assign complex strategies to NPCs using a selection of radial wheels.

Game Of Thrones RPG Trailer & Screens Debut Riverspring

Cyanide Studio have sent us more screenshots and a trailer for the Game Of Thrones RPG, introducing the town of Riverspring. The Unreal-powered visuals are looking fairly reasonable (if a little on the gloomy side), and we hope that Cyanide can do a better job than they managed with A Game Of Thrones: Genesis. George R.R. Martin's epic series definitely deserves a great game.

Assets below, previous Westeros screenshots here.
