Wargaming.net Buy FEAR 3 Dev For Million

The developers at Wargaming.net - the folks behind the stratospherically popular World of Tanks - are preparing an assault on the console market, and today announced the acquisition the Chicago-based Day 1 Studios for $20 million.

According to a press release sent out by Wargaming, their newly formed studio will "focus exclusively on the development of an unannounced console title."

F.E.A.R 3 or Fuh-three-ah as we've taken to calling it, just to annoy Jon, might not exactly have been as chock-full of scares and thrills as we'd have liked. In fact, it was a fairly middling shooter, really. But playing as Paxton Fettel is deeply satisfying, given that you can possess enemies and psychically bring them to their knees. In the co-op modes, sat beside a mate, it's still an utter blast.

F.E.A.R. 3 never quite lives up to its name, but it is a solid and enjoyable shooter in its own right. Dave's full review should bring you up to speed on this action-oriented romp (no, it isn't scary, ever), which caters towards fans of persistent levelling and co-op rather than horror afficionados. Playing as Paxton Fettel is a real highlight as you can posess and psychically brutalise your enemies instead of relying on standard FPS gunplay. Personally, I reckon that the franchise has gone as far as it can go, but F.E.A.R. 3 is still rollickingly good fun with a mate along for the ride.

We've seen it cheaper thanks to Green Man Gaming's voucher code deal, but this is still a significant saving.

F.E.A.R. 3 isn't quite as good as the previous games that share the F.E.A.R. name, but playing as Paxton Fettel is a lot of fun, giving you the opportunity to possess and psychically brutalise your enemies instead of relying on standard FPS gunplay. GMG have got it for under £3 if you fancy some solid co-op action. Nice spot goonertillidie!

The single player behind this one won't exactly blow you away and it isn't particularly scary at all, but it does support co-op and there are plenty of things for you to shoot at. I really enjoyed F.E.A.R. 3's multiplayer because it contains a dash of the supernatural that mixes things up a little bit. Game and Gamestation are currently parting with PC copies of the game for £6.99, which should save you just under £6 on the next best offer coming in from Zavvi.

Day 1 Studios Unveil Reign Of Thunder

New Mech Game From MechAssault Creators

Day 1 Studios have revealed their latest project: a "hard-hitting, fast-paced, explosive action game with all the customization options you could ever want." Reign Of Thunder will be a colourful and visceral mech combat title that leverages a free-to-play multiplayer model. Considering Day 1 Studios' experience with MechAssault and F.E.A.R. 3's Elite Powered Armour suits, it could well be a serious contender.

The mech genre seems to be undergoing a renaissance thanks to Mechwarrior Online, Armored Core V, Hawken and this new title. No complaints here.

We've got a trailer after the break.

The Hearts Of Men: Throne Of Deceit Interview | From Triple-A To Indie...

...Between Gauntlet & The Dishwasher

Indie development is fast becoming one of the most important sources of innovation and inspiration within our industry, and a veritable font of excellent games for negligible prices. The Hearts Of Men was a perfect example of this phenomenon when it released on the Xbox Live Indie earlier this year, and after securing our Indie Game Of The Week accolade, COLTRAN Studios has been hard at work completing a remastered, extended and definitive version. Known as Throne Of Deceit, this new version will offer a massive amount of new content when it launches next week.

Studio director Jason Zielinski is a art department veteran of both Midway and Day 1 Studios with titles like Mortal Kombat, Stranghehold and F.E.A.R. 3 on his resume - one of an increasing number of experienced AAA developers who have decided to jump into the exciting Indie arena. Eager to discuss the new project... as well as learning why developers choose to to go from Triple-A to indie development... I sat down with with him for a chat.

Jonathan Lester (Dealspwn): Many thanks for talking to us. First of all, could you introduce yourselves to our readers - and tell us about your triple-A background?

Jason Zielinski (COLTRAN Studios): First off, thank you for this opportunity! It's always great to speak about all of our efforts and share with the community. My background started out at Midway Chicago, back in 2005 working on such titles as Stranglehold, Ballers, and the Mortal Kombat series to name a few titles, where I worked as a cinematic character artist. After Midway, I went to work at Day 1 Studios, another Chicago based studio, where I was an environmental and concept artist on "Fracture" and "F.E.A.R. 3", as well as many conceptual pitches for games like Tron and Batman. My next step actually went in 2 directions--I was laid off from Day 1 Studios, and it was here I knew COLTRAN was what I wanted to be doing, so as I started to build our (COLTRAN) team, I took the title of Lead Artist at Toy Studio, a social game company in Chicago. While there, I worked on Pet Rescue and Candy Dream for Facebook, and eventually found our way to the mobile market, with over 15 titles on the Nook Color. And, currently, I work as the Lead Artist for a new social startup in Chicago, laying the groundwork within the new studio for our first Facebook game.

We featured this deal a couple of months ago, but since it's still in stock and kicking arse, we're bringing it to your attention once again. Simply Games are continuing to lower the price on the PS3 version of F.E.A.R. 3, following on from the deal we highlighted a few weeks ago by lowering their offer by a fiver. It means you can save almost £7 in comparison to the next best deal coming from Amazon. However, is the price drop worth giving the latest entry in the F.E.A.R. series a look? If you’re looking for a scary game, probably not. If you’re looking for a fairly entertaining co-op title with some interesting if run-of-the-mill multiplayer modes, it could well be. Be sure to read Dave’s review for the full scoop. Thanks to goonertillidie @ HUKD!

Unfortunately, there's almost no chance whatsoever that F.E.A.R. 3'll scare you in any way whatsoever, which is a bit disappointing for a horror game. Luckily the supernatural edge to the multiplayer provides you with a bit of a change from normal first person shooter gameplay and can be a lot fun too, although a few extra maps in the future'd be nice. You can grab an Xbox 360 copy of the game from ShopTo for £27.85, which'll make you a saving of over £1.50 on the next best offer coming in from Game Gears.

Sadly F.E.A.R. 3 won't have you jumping behind the sofa, or furiously scrabbling about in the dark for your light switches or pull cords because it's just not that scary. I quite enjoyed the supernatural edge the multiplayer had though because it brings a bit of variety to the standard shooter formula, but it could do with a bit of DLC in the future. You can get hold of a PC copy of the game from Simply Games for £24.85, which'll save you over £3 on the next best offer coming in from The Game Collection.

Boo! If that scared you, welcome to the world of F.3.A.R / F.E.A.R 3 / Fear 3 and watch yourself, things like that'll be happening all the time.

If it didn't scare you, then the third F.E.A.R (from now on, it'll just be Fear 3, as it's easier to type) will cause you no problems at all, because the shock tactic is the only method it employs to unnerve the player. Compared to something like Amnesia it's like watching Blue Peter. Admittedly a Blue Peter where Valerie Singleton is disembowelled by a maniacal Mark Curry, but still.

Perhaps it would have been scarier or at least more atmospheric if there'd been any real sense of connection with the world around you, but as you'll pretty much be asking the “wait, why exactly am I doing this?” question for most of your time with it, this connection never happens.

Why do you start in a prison? Why is the prison in Mexico? How come your brother's ghost makes very loud footstep noises? Why is the main character suddenly able to 'sync' with the souls of the selected dead?
